YouTube raises eligibility requirements for Partner Program

YouTube just raised the bar for creators who want to make money on its platform. Starting February 1, 2027, channels must have at least 1,000 subscribers and either 8,000 watch hours over the past year or 20 million Shorts views in the last 90 days to join the YouTube Partner Program (YPP) and earn ad revenue. The current threshold is 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views, so the new rules are roughly double the effort.

The move comes as YouTube tightens up its rules to cut down on spammy or low-effort channels that game the system. Over the years, the platform has faced criticism for letting creators monetize low-quality or even harmful content, from clickbait compilations to borderline misinformation. YouTube says the change aims to reward creators who build real audiences, not just chase quick views. Itโ€™s also a way to push creators toward longer-form content, since Shorts views alone wonโ€™t cut it unless the numbers are huge.

The new thresholds are steep but not impossible. Only about 2.5% of all YouTube channels currently meet the stricter requirements, according to a 2023 estimate by the platform. Creators who already monetize will keep their status, but new applicants will face a tougher climb. Smaller creatorsโ€”especially those who rely on Shortsโ€”could take a hit, though YouTube says itโ€™s still committed to supporting them through other programs like the YouTube Shopping affiliate tool.

The change reflects YouTubeโ€™s broader push to professionalize the platform and make it more appealing to brands. With ad revenue growth slowing, YouTube needs higher-quality content to keep advertisers happy. The shift could also push creators to focus more on community and memberships, where income isnโ€™t tied to ads. Either way, the February 2027 deadline gives creators nearly a year to adjustโ€”if they can.
