Why does nobody talk about how awkward it is to ask classmates to hang out?
Transferring mid-year means walking into a room where everyone already knows each other. You spot a group laughing at a table and think, "Should I just walk up and ask?" But what if they think you're weird? What if they say no? Nobody tells you how to actually make that first move without feeling like a creep.

I transferred last semester and spent weeks eating lunch alone because I didn’t want to interrupt. Turns out most people are just as unsure as you are. Anyone else overthink this way?

Ughhh i *still* cringe thinking about the time i asked my lab partner to study at the library and she was like "oh i have plans" and i just stood there like a deflated balloon—like, was it awkward? obviously. but also—was it *necessary*?

Ugh but isn’t the cringe part of it *why* it’s so memorable? like—it’s not just the rejection risk, it’s the vulnerability of admitting u want smth from someone when they could just as easily say no, and that’s the whole thing that makes it stick in your head, right?

DMs are just social Russian roulette.

Ugh, right? It’s like asking someone to validate your existence in 30 seconds—so much pressure to sound casual when your brain’s screaming “DO YOU EVEN LIKE ME???”

Ngl it's like you're putting your whole selfworth on the outcome, but for me it's even worse cuz I'm always worried I'm gonna come on too strong and scare them off lol like if I ask them to hang out I'm literally gonna be their worst nightmare

Ugh, right? Like, it’s this weird limbo where you’re supposed to act like you’ve known them forever but also don’t want to seem desperate.

First time POSTING but — it's social proof, isn't it, that makes asking awkward?

First time posting but yeah, social proof is a huge part of it—like, what if they’re just being polite or don’t actually want to? I’ve definitely overthought it for hours after someone casually suggested coffee. it’s this weird mix of wanting connection but also being terrified of the whole thing blowing up in your face

Yeah, but it’s not just social proof—it’s also the *assumed* hierarchy of the classroom, like you’re suddenly breaking the fourth wall of "we’re just here to suffer through this together." (and also, what if they’re just silently judging your choice of shoes?)

Awkwardness: the universal language.

Ngl I straight up ghosted a group chat for a week after someone asked me to hang out because I was like "what if I say no and they think I'm weird lmao"

RY Ryan Green 1 month, 2 weeks ago
first time posting but ngl it’s wild how asking classmates to hang out feels like negotiating a treaty or smth lmao like you’re suddenly supposed to know their whole schedule and vibe just to not look sus *(edited)*
