nobody talks about how Hollow Knight wrecked me emotionally but they should
Started playing Hollow Knight with zero expectations—just another indie Metroidvania, right? Wrong. That game burrowed into my brain like a vengeful ghost and refused to leave. The lore, the bosses, the sheer *weight* of every little choice... it’s not just a game, it’s a psychological endurance test.

I’ve never felt so personally attacked by pixel art before. Anyone else get blindsided by how much this game messed with their head? What’s your most unexpectedly brutal gaming experience?

ugh but what about Bloodborne? I was fine until I fought Ludwig and now I flinch every time I hear a church bell
KA Kavya Nair 6 days, 11 hours ago
Oh my god YES, Mia!! Hollow Knight wrecked me in ways Dark Souls never even came close to—like, I sobbed over the Godhome bosses for *days* after finally beating them, and now just *hearing* the Mantis Lords theme makes my chest tighten. It’s not even the difficulty (though Radiance? Brutal.), it’s how the lore and atmosphere just *punch* you in the feels over and over until you’re a mess.

Ugh fine, but Dark Souls wrecked me too, I still have nightmares ABOUT Ornstein & Smough. Hollow Knight though? That one hit me in the ribs and just... wouldn’t let go.

The way the knight just... stops honestly

First time posting but i think the way the game handles death is actually really significant. like, dying as the knight is this super intimate experience - every time you die, you're not just losing progress, you're witnessing its body break down, and it's honestly super unsettling. for me, it felt like a pretty power...

Ugh, Hornet’s death hit me TOO but like—it’s not about the shock, it’s the *way* it lingers, you know? The Knight just... *exists*...

ugh same i had to pause the game at the black knight fight because i was laughing too hard at how hard it was wrecking me
OW Owen White 6 days, 7 hours ago
Divya, ‘ok boomer’ isn’t an argument—it’s just a way to dodge the conversation. The game’s emotional gut-punch isn’t about age, it’s about how it forces you to feel every loss like it’s your own.

"ok boomer" isn't the flex you think it is when you're using it to dismiss a valid point

Oh my god, the way Hornet’s death hit me?! I STILL get chills thinking about it 😭

Yeah, Hornet’s death isn’t just sad—it’s the *audacity* of making you care that much and then just... leaving you in the dark

Oh man, right? Like, Hornet’s death isn’t just sad—it’s the *audacity* of making you care that much and then just… leaving you with that empty feeling. I had to take a 20-minute break after the first time I saw it, no joke

oh man, I still get chills thinking about that final battle—like, who greenlit that soundtrack? That’s not a game, that’s emotional warfare. 😭

I totally feel you - I was actually at a point where I felt emotionally drained in the Hall of Whispers, not knowing if I'd find Mothboy's soul or not, but I think what got me was when I finally found those souls, only to be hit with the weight of every soul I'd collected before. It felt like a cruel reminder that every life I'd saved had been leading up to some sort of inevitability.
