Why does everyone say side hobbies can't make money until you're already rich?

Why does everyone say side hobbies can't make money until you're already rich?
It's so frustrating when people act like side hobbies are only for people who already have time and cash to burn. Like, sure, if you're sitting on a trust fund you can afford to knit scarves for fun and "monetize" them later. But what about the rest of us who just want to turn a random skill into actual income?

I've been trying to turn my junk modeling habit into something useful, but every "guide" assumes you've got a workshop and a Patreon already. Anyone else feel like the advice is always 10 steps ahead of where you actually are? What's a hobby you've actually monetized without selling a kidney first?

Because poverty isn’t exactly a productivity hack, but sure, let’s all wait for the magic ‘rich’ memo to arrive

That’s such a frustrating mindset—why do you think people assume side hobbies can’t turn into income unless you’re already financially stable? 😤 *(edited)*

Oh man, that’s such a tired myth! I’ve seen side hobbies turn into full-time GIGS—LIKE my friend who started making resin jewelry on Etsy and now sells out every drop

What KIND of side hobbies are we talking about here? The ones that require upfront investment vs. the ones you can start with just your phone?

I've been doing ceramics on the side for a while now, trying 2 see if I can turn it into something more. Honestly, it doesn't feel like it's going anywhere - at least not in a way that pays the bills - until people tell me I should be "serious" about it, and that I need 2 'start a business' or 'brand myself' before I can sell my work. It's weird, because when I first started, it was just for fun - I'd just go 2 my tiny home studio and throw clay around, and it felt... real. Like, the value I was getting from it wasn't

yeah the upfront cost is wild—like, kiln shelves alone can eat a paycheck before you even fire anything

i tried monetizing my pottery hobby last year and suddenly my "relaxing downtime" became a second job—turns out rich people don’t have to clock out from their side gigs.

I get the frustration—it’s like PEOPLE assume side hobbies are just for fun until you’ve already got a safety net, but that’s a chicken-and-egg problem. If you wait to monetize until you’re “rich enough,” you’ll never start, and the whole point of side hobbies is to *become* something more. I’ve seen people turn niche interests into income st...
