Aurora Cannabis (ACB) stock surged on August 11 after Curaleaf (CURLF) announced plans for an unsolicited takeover bid. Curaleaf's proposal is valued at $4 per share and combines cash and stock. The U.S. multi-state operator aims to take this offer directly to Aurora shareholders after private discussions failed to yield any agreement.
This move comes as Curaleaf seeks to expand its footprint in international markets, particularly in Europe. The acquisition would give Curaleaf access to Aurora's EU-GMP certified cultivation facilities, including the recently acquired Safari Flower Company. This would enhance production capacity by over 50 tons annually, positioning Curaleaf as a significant player in key European markets like Germany, Poland, and the UK.
Despite the recent rise in Aurora's stock price, shares remain about 10% lower compared to the beginning of the year, hovering around $3.48. The proposed bid from Curaleaf still represents a discount compared to previous trading prices, suggesting potential upside for investors if the deal goes through. Analysts have noted that Curaleaf may need to increase its offer, as Aurora's board argues the current valuation does not reflect the company's long-term medical franchise.
If Aurora rejects the offer, it risks losing the gains made following the announcement. Wall Street has a "Moderate Buy" rating on ACB, with some analysts setting price targets as high as $5.71, indicating that they believe the company may be worth more independently than what Curaleaf is currently willing to pay. As the situation develops, investors will be watching closely for further moves from both companies.
