Airbnb announced on Thursday that it will roll out its own AI travel agent in the first half of 2027, according to the companyโs Q3 shareholder letter. The new feature is meant to help guests plan trips, book stays and manage reservations through a purposeโbuilt artificialโintelligence system.
The plan follows months of hints that Airbnb wants a smarter tool for travel planning. CEO BrianโฏChesky has argued that typical chatbots are illโsuited for vacations because they focus on routine tasks, not the inspiration many travelers seek. He noted that about 80โฏ% of travelers say they enjoy researching destinations, looking at photos and comparing options. Chesky said Airbnb needs a custom solution that preserves that exploratory experience while still offering AI assistance.
Airbnbโs AI agent will not rely on a simple textโonly chat. Instead, it will pull from a library of travelโspecific UI componentsโmaps, photos, price comparisons, calendars and itinerariesโand assemble them in real time to answer a userโs question. Chesky described the experience as โa little bit like generative UI,โ delivering the right interface at the right moment. The company says it will use nearly two decades of data on how hosts and guests interact to fineโtune the system. Beyond initial booking, the agent will help with reservation changes, payment issues, refunds, reโbooking and 24โhour safety support throughout a trip.
If the AI travel agent lives up to its promise, it could reshape how people plan holidays online. It may keep users inside Airbnbโs ecosystem longer and open a new revenue stream for the company. Investors and industry watchers will be looking for early performance signals when the tool finally launches in 2027.
