Amazon (AMZN) is About to 6X Its Drone Delivery Footprint to Compete With Rivals Like DoorDash (DASH)

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN ) said on August 20, 2026, that it will expand its Prime Air drone delivery service to nearly 500 US cities by the end of 2026, a sixfold increase from its current 11 locations. It was a part of a broader race with DoorDash, Inc. (NASDAQ: DASH ), Uber, and Walmart to bring deliveries to the sky.

More than a decade after Jeff Bezos first unveiled delivery drones on television, multiple major delivery companies are now scaling the technology simultaneously.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN) said Prime Air will grow to nearly 500 US cities and towns by the end of 2026, delivering eligible items up to five pounds in as little as 30 minutes. This growth arrives right after Amazon's own second-quarter results showed total net sales crossing $200 billion for the first time in a single quarter, up 20%, with operating income up 43% to $27.5 billion. It is proof that Amazon has the cash and operating strength to fund an ambitious drone rollout without straining the rest of the business.

Amazon.com, Inc. (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s drone volume is still a tiny slice of the nearly 20 million packages it delivers daily in the US, according to ShipMatrix. Amazon's own Q2 report shows where the real investment priority sits instead, since capital spending on a trailing 12-month basis hit $169 billion, up 64% year over year, almost entirely linked to AI and cloud infrastructure for AWS rather than delivery drones. Management raised full-year capital spending guidance to about $220 billion from $200 billion, all pointed at data centers. A widely shared incident where a Texas customer's drone delivery dropped straight into her backyard pool this month highlights real reliability risk as Amazon scales into hundreds of new, less-controlled areas.

Its rival DoorDash, Inc. (NASDAQ:DASH) launched DoorDash Air after getting its own FAA approval to run drone delivery itself instead of relying only on outside partners. It joins a network that already includes DoorDash's Dot delivery robot alongside human drivers.

DoorDash, Inc. (NASDAQ:DASH) has completed only tens of thousands of drone deliveries so far, compared with more than 10 billion orders across its whole network. The field is also getting more crowded since Uber is partnering with drone company Zipline, worth $7.6 billion. It aims for 1 million drone deliveries a day by 2029, a much bigger goal than what either Amazon or DoorDash has promised so far.

Every major delivery company is now racing into the sky at once, but by the numbers, drones remain a rounding error next to the trucks, vans, and couriers still doing the vast majority of the work.
