Android Auto is set to receive a major makeover in the coming months, with more fluid elements, fewer rigid shapes, widget support, and video playback — finally ! So anyone who still considers Android Auto inferior (at least, visually) to Apple CarPlay will no longer have their reasons to complain. The exact date for this rollout remains unclear at this moment, but with Google having crossed major milestones in terms of hardware launches — though the Googlebook launch still remains, we could expect it to pour its energy into bringing the promised software upgrades.
We’re already seeing signs that Google is making progress in this direction, and the first indication is a new, upgraded icon for Android Auto. With version 17.6.663424 of Android Auto, we’ve spotted a new icon with subtle variations and a new color.
The first thing that strikes us about this change is the switch from blue to green as the icon’s dominant color. This shade of green appears to be very similar to the Android bugdroid’s green. The color choice could also signify the transition to greener, predominantly electric, modes of transport.
Other more nuanced changes include rounder corners than before, even on the paper airplane-resembling upward arrow. There isn’t much variation in the shadows used on both elements, but you can see more pronounced padding between the green and white parts of the logo.
It’s interesting to see Google opting for solid colors instead of a gradient, unlike some other Google apps , despite its push for Gemini in Maps and Android Auto . The new icon should be available when the newest version hits your devices. Only a handful of us see it currently, suggesting it may not reflect immediately for all users, though the wait shouldn’t be too long either.
Apart from the icon, there are no functionality changes at the moment, but we’ll be monitoring the interface for any changes over the coming days.
