Prime Minister Andy Burnham has condemned Russell Brand for his "horrific" crimes, which include one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, as Brand faces increasing scrutiny following his conviction. Burnham also addressed Labour's past connections with the comedian, emphasizing that his party's support of Brand occurred before police investigations into the allegations began.

The renewed focus on Brand comes in light of his recent guilty verdict, which has reignited discussions about his previous influence in political circles. More than a decade ago, some members of the Labour Party sought to align themselves with Brand due to his anti-establishment rhetoric and left-wing views. In 2014, Burnham, then serving as shadow health secretary, publicly supported Brand during a controversy regarding his housing arrangements, which prompted media criticism. At that time, Brand was a prominent figure, contributing opinion pieces to newspapers and appearing on political talk shows, including BBCโ€™s Question Time.

In his remarks to the BBC, Burnham acknowledged that he was unaware of the full scope of Brand's actions at the time of his earlier support. He expressed that it is often difficult to know everything about public figures and highlighted the importance of accountability for wrongdoing. Burnham praised the courage of Brand's victims and commended journalists for uncovering the truth behind the allegations. He stated, "His crimes are horrific, he's rightly been held to account, justice for the victims and that is the right course that's been taken here."

Former Labour leader Ed Miliband also faced questions regarding his past interactions with Brand. Miliband, who was interviewed by Brand during the 2015 general election campaign, has since expressed regret about that engagement, revealing that he was not aware of the allegations against Brand at the time. A spokesperson for Miliband reiterated his sympathy for the victims, emphasizing that had he known the extent of the allegations, he would not have participated in the interview. As the Labour Party grapples with its past associations, these developments highlight the ongoing need for scrutiny and accountability within political relationships.
