Camerimage opened its 34th edition in Toruń, Poland, with a minute of silence for the victims of the Kraków mass shooting that took place just hours before the festival began, organizers said. The tragedy, which left at least six people dead and several others wounded, cast a somber tone over the opening ceremony of the internationally renowned cinematography festival. The moment of silence was observed before the scheduled tributes to director Darren Aronofsky, who received the festival’s Lifetime Achievement Award, and the introduction of Luca Guadagnino’s new film “Artificial.”

The Kraków attack, carried out at a popular shopping centre in the city’s historic district, shocked Poland and reignited debates about public safety and gun control in a country with relatively low rates of gun violence. The shooting occurred on a Saturday afternoon, drawing crowds of shoppers and tourists, and was quickly linked to a lone gunman who was apprehended by police. The incident comes at a time when Poland is hosting several high‑profile cultural events, including the European Film Awards and the upcoming World Economic Forum in Warsaw, heightening concerns about security at public gatherings.

Festival director Maja Michałek said the silence was a “necessary act of solidarity” with the victims and their families, and noted that the film community has a long tradition of responding to tragedy with collective remembrance. Aronofsky, whose work often explores themes of trauma and redemption, accepted his award after a brief statement urging audiences to “use art as a refuge and a catalyst for change.” Guadagnino, speaking before the screening of “Artificial,” described his film as an “exploration of human connection in a digital age,” acknowledging the “weight of the moment” and thanking the audience for their compassion.

Camerimage will continue its program over the next ten days, featuring masterclasses, competitions, and screenings that highlight the craft of cinematography. Security has been tightened across all venues, with additional police presence and coordinated checks announced by local authorities. Organizers hope the festival can provide a space for healing and dialogue, reminding participants that the power of visual storytelling can both reflect and shape the world in the wake of tragedy.
