Escalate pilots app offering Uber vouchers for McDonald's workers in Maryland

To ensure he arrives on time for his shifts, he relies on Escalate, a startup that provides Uber vouchers and other support for workers in need. Launched late last year, Escalate is piloting its employee assistance app at seven McDonald's locations in the suburban Washington, D.C. area, offering a lifeline to those facing transportation difficulties.

The startup was founded by Sienna Daniel and Sean Segal, who previously worked in nonprofits focused on employment training. They noticed that even when individuals secured jobs, many faced everyday obstacles that made it hard to maintain employment, such as car troubles and childcare issues. Daniel has seen this struggle firsthand, as her own family members in Ohio have juggled work and life while supporting each other through various crises. She emphasizes that while job opportunities exist, many workers lack the support systems needed to take advantage of them.

Escalate aims to address these gaps by providing immediate, practical solutions for workers. Ramos appreciates the app, stating, "I don't know if any other jobs really have that option, so I'm glad this one does." The founders believe their approach can enhance job stability, especially for those relying on minimum wage positions to support their families. They recognize that even low-paying jobs are crucial for many workers, who often have no safety net to fall back on.

As Escalate continues to expand its services, it highlights the urgent need for innovative solutions to support workers in the gig economy.
