HCA Healthcare reported an 8.7% revenue increase for Q2 2026 but cut its full-year profitability guidance due to a surge in uninsured patients, leading to target reductions from analysts. The companyโฆ
HCA Healthcare, Inc. reported its second-quarter 2026 financial results on July 24, revealing an 8.7% year-over-year revenue increase to $20.23 billion. However, the company also announced a downward revision to its full-year profitability guidance, influenced by a shift in payer mix and rising uninsured volumes. This news has prompted immediate target cuts from multiple analysts on Wall Street.
The context for this revision stems from significant policy changes, including Medicaid redeterminations, which have led to a spike in uninsured patients. HCA estimates that this shift has cost it approximately $400 million in pre-tax income for the quarter. As a result, the company now anticipates that the full-year impact of exchange-related losses could reach between $1 billion and $1.2 billion, partially mitigated by expected benefits of $300 million to $500 million from the Medicaid Supplemental Payment Program.
Despite the challenges, HCA's operational performance showed some positive metrics. Same-facility admissions rose by 2.5%, while emergency room visits increased by 3.6%. However, the company faced declines in same-facility inpatient surgeries and outpatient surgeries, which fell by 2.3% and 3.4%, respectively. Following the earnings report, Mizuho reduced its price target for HCA to $475, while Morgan Stanley lowered its target to $380, reflecting concerns over slower growth and a disappointing core EBITDA performance.
Looking ahead, the question remains whether HCA's guidance cut signifies a structural issue in its earnings or if it represents a temporary setback that could create an attractive investment opportunity. Supporters of the company highlight its substantial market presence, operating 190 hospitals and around 2,600 ambulatory sites across 19 states and the UK. This operational scale gives HCA a competitive edge in negotiating with payers and suppliers, reinforcing its potential for durable earnings in the healthcare sector.
