Women in their midlife, particularly those going through perimenopause, are increasingly experiencing the common but often overlooked condition of dry eyes. This issue has gained attention as more women report symptoms that disrupt daily activities, including driving and reading. Hilda Hernandez Nash, a woman in her late 40s, noted the sudden onset of her symptoms earlier this year, describing her eyes as feeling like "sandpaper" and becoming red and swollen, which prompted a visit to an eye doctor.
Research highlights that nearly half of women in the menopausal transition experience symptoms of dry eyes. Experts like Lauren Gormley, an optometrist at Johns Hopkins University, explain that while men also suffer from dry eyes, women over 50 are twice as likely to be affected. The condition arises when the eyes either fail to produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. A significant factor contributing to this issue is the malfunctioning of the meibomian glands, which are responsible for producing the oil that prevents tears from drying out too quickly.
Hormonal changes during menopause play a crucial role in this condition. As androgen levels decline, the quality and quantity of oil produced by the meibomian glands are compromised. This results in increased tear evaporation and inflammation of the eye's surface. Additionally, fluctuations in estrogen levels may also contribute, as the lacrimal glands that produce the watery part of tears contain estrogen receptors. Dr. Kelly Nichols from the University of Alabama at Birmingham emphasizes that while hormonal changes are a significant factor, other everyday elements, like prolonged screen time and contact lens use, can exacerbate dry eye symptoms.
As the prevalence of dry eyes among women continues to rise, it is critical for those experiencing symptoms to seek medical advice. Ignoring these signs can lead to increased discomfort and impact quality of life. Understanding the connection between menopause and dry eye symptoms is essential for women to take proactive steps in managing their eye health, especially in an age where digital device usage is at an all-time high.
