Home Depot reported stronger-than-expected earnings for the second quarter, with revenue reaching $47.9 billion, surpassing analysts' projections of $47.3 billion. The company also saw adjusted earnings grow by 0.2% to $4.79 per share, beating the forecast of $4.73. This performance comes as customers increasingly focus on smaller home improvement projects while the broader housing market remains stagnant.
The results reflect a shift in consumer behavior amid ongoing challenges in the housing sector. Home Depot's CFO Richard McPhail noted that demand remained robust across various segments, despite customers making fewer visits to stores. Notably, same-store sales rose 1.7%, outpacing expectations of around 1%. In the U.S., same-store sales increased by 1.3%, also exceeding the anticipated 0.9%. The company attributed this momentum to spring outdoor categories, such as patio items and grills, as well as positive sales growth in 13 out of 16 product categories.
Despite these gains, Home Depot faces headwinds from a housing market characterized by low turnover rates. McPhail pointed out that larger discretionary projects are still under pressure due to persistent economic conditions, with 30-year fixed mortgage rates hovering around 6.7%. He emphasized that there is no immediate sign of improvement in housing activity, which remains "frozen." The company's forecast for 2026 remains unchanged, expecting total sales growth of 2.5% to 4.5% for the year.
Additionally, Home Depot benefited from $730 million in tariff refunds during the quarter, which helped offset rising costs associated with fuel, energy, and materials. Market analysts suggest that these results may set a challenging benchmark for competitors like Lowe's, which is expected to report its quarterly results soon. As consumers continue to prioritize smaller projects, the dynamics of the home improvement sector may see further shifts in the coming months.
