NASA plans 2029 Alpha Centauri mission

A nonprofit called the Fermi Explorer Mission plans to launch a spacecraft to Alpha Centauri by the end of 2029, marking humanityโs first attempt to send a probe to another star system.
The mission targets our nearest stellar neighbor, 4.4 light-years away, where a potentially habitable exoplanet, Proxima Centauri b, orbits one of the systemโs stars. Interest in interstellar travel has grown in recent years, driven by advances in propulsion and AI, as well as discoveries of exoplanets that could support life. Breakthrough Starshot, a separate initiative backed by Yuri Milner, has explored sending tiny, laser-propelled probes to the same system, but Fermi Explorerโs approach relies on a more conventional, though slower, spacecraft.
The spacecraft would take up to 80,000 years to reach Alpha Centauriโfar longer than a human lifespanโhighlighting the scale of interstellar distances. The missionโs team acknowledges the challenge but frames it as a long-term scientific endeavor, with the probe potentially carrying messages or artifacts for any future civilization that might intercept it. Critics argue the timeline renders the mission impractical, but supporters say itโs a necessary step toward eventual faster travel.
If successful, the launch would test humanityโs ability to plan and execute multi-generational space projects. The mission could also inspire new technologies for propulsion or communication over vast distances, pushing the boundaries of whatโs possible in deep-space exploration. For now, the Fermi Explorer Mission is seeking funding and partnerships to turn its vision into reality.
