According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the planet records around 20,000 earthquakes annually, which averages out to about 55 per day. Most of these quakes are minor and go unnoticed by the public. Significant damage typically occurs with earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above. In 2026 alone, the Philippines recorded the strongest quake at magnitude 7.8, while the recent quakes in Mexico and Colombia also registered above 7.4. By mid-August, the world had already seen 91 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher, including 11 that exceeded magnitude 7, slightly ahead of the decade's average but still well within the norm.
