In recent weeks, a series of powerful earthquakes has struck different parts of the world, raising concerns about seismic activity. Three earthquakes of magnitude 7 or higher hit Indonesia, Colombia, and Mexico, resulting in hundreds of fatalities. Earlier in June, twin quakes devastated northern Venezuela, killing over 6,300 people. This unprecedented surge in seismic events has sparked renewed questioning about whether the Earth is experiencing more earthquakes now than in the past.

According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the planet records around 20,000 earthquakes annually, which averages out to about 55 per day. Most of these quakes are minor and go unnoticed by the public. Significant damage typically occurs with earthquakes of magnitude 6 and above. In 2026 alone, the Philippines recorded the strongest quake at magnitude 7.8, while the recent quakes in Mexico and Colombia also registered above 7.4. By mid-August, the world had already seen 91 earthquakes of magnitude 6 or higher, including 11 that exceeded magnitude 7, slightly ahead of the decade's average but still well within the norm.

While the recent spike in seismic activity has caught public attention, historical data indicates that earthquakes occur consistently throughout the year without any predictable seasonal patterns. The USGS has noted that the tectonic stress that leads to major earthquakes cannot be linked to a specific timeframe, making it difficult for scientists to predict when a significant quake will occur. Instead, seismologists focus on calculating the probabilities of large earthquakes in specific regions over longer time spans, which helps inform building codes and early warning systems designed to protect communities.

Ultimately, the deadliness of an earthquake is less about its magnitude and more about its location. Factors like depth, urban proximity, and local building resilience play crucial roles in determining the impact of an earthquake. The most lethal quakes in the past decade have not necessarily been the largest; rather, they have often struck beneath densely populated areas. The ongoing discussions about earthquake frequency and preparedness highlight the importance of understanding seismic risks and enhancing infrastructure to withstand potential disasters.
