Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta remained silent on 16‑year‑old Max Dowman’s reaction after the teenager was shown a red card for violent conduct in Arsenal’s 2‑1 loss to Fleetwood Town in the FA Cup on Saturday.
The defeat was a shock because Arsenal entered the match as overwhelming favourites, having fielded a side that included several academy players after injuries to senior squad members. Dowman, who turned 16 last month, was given his first senior start as part of Arteta’s push to integrate youth talent. Arsenal have not lost to a lower‑league side in the competition since 2015, and the red card added to the embarrassment.
The incident happened in the 68th minute when Dowman swung his arm at Fleetwood defender Jordan Thompson and was immediately sent off. At 16 years and 45 days, he became the youngest player ever dismissed in an FA Cup match. Dowman posted an apology on social media, saying he let the team down. Arsenal captain Martin Ødegaard defended the youngster, calling him “a brave kid learning the ropes.” The Football Association imposed a standard three‑match ban, meaning Dowman will miss the next league fixture.
Arteta said after the game that the club would review the incident and support the teenager, but he declined to comment on Dowman’s personal reaction. The manager will meet with academy staff to decide whether the player returns to the first‑team squad after serving his suspension. Arsenal now turn their attention to a crucial Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday, hoping to bounce back and avoid further criticism over discipline and youth integration.
