Rescuers in Nepal and China are still combing the floodโtorn border region, searching for almost 3,000 people who went missing after the monsoon rains turned the area into a river of mud and debris. The search began after the Ganga and Karnali rivers burst their banks on 12โฏJune, flooding villages on both sides of the border. So far, authorities have recovered 682 bodies โ 675 in Nepal and seven in China โ and are using drones, helicopters and ground teams to locate the missing.
The disaster is part of a pattern of extreme weather that has hit South Asia in recent years. Heavy monsoon rains, combined with deforestation and weak river embankments, caused the rivers to overflow. The flood hit the remote districts of Karnali in Nepal and Yunnan in China, where many homes were built on lowโlying riverbanks. The loss of life is staggering: over 3,000 missing, more than 1,000 confirmed dead, and thousands displaced. Local governments have declared a state of emergency and the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs has called for international aid.
The next phase of the response involves extending the search, providing medical care to the wounded, and restoring basic services. Nepalโs Red Cross and Chinaโs Red Cross are coordinating with the National Disaster Management Authority to set up temporary shelters and supply food, clean water and blankets. Both countries have asked for additional funding from the World Bank and other donors to rebuild embankments and improve early warning systems. In the longer term, officials are reviewing floodโcontrol infrastructure and considering stricter building codes in floodโprone areas. The tragedy highlights the urgent need for climateโadaptation measures and stronger crossโborder cooperation to prevent future loss of life.
