On Tuesday, NPRโ€™s Michel Martin spoke with Boone County clerk Brianna Lennon about the legal fight over Missouriโ€™s congressional maps. Lennon said the battle could change how many of her countyโ€™s voters are represented in Congress. She explained that the current map, drawn by the state legislature, has been challenged in federal court and may be replaced before the 2024 election. The outcome will decide whether Boone Countyโ€™s voters are grouped with neighboring communities or split across districts.

Missouriโ€™s legislature approved a new map in 2023 that drew heavy criticism from civilโ€‘rights groups. They argued the map packed Democratic voters into one district while splitting Republican voters across several, a tactic known as gerrymandering. A federal judge ruled the map violated the Voting Rights Act, ordering the state to redraw it. The state has since proposed a new map, but the proposal is still under judicial review. The fight reflects a broader national debate about fair representation and the role of partisan politics in drawing districts.

Lennon told NPR that under the old map, Boone County was divided between two congressional districts. The new map would place the entire county in a single district, potentially giving voters a stronger voice in choosing their representative. She said many residents are anxious about the change, hoping it will reduce partisan bias. Some voters fear the new map could favor one party, while others believe it will make elections more competitive. The clerk noted that the mapโ€™s final shape will affect campaign strategies, funding, and voter turnout in the upcoming election.

The next step is a vote by the Missouri legislature on the new map. If approved, it will be used in the 2024 election. If the legislature rejects it or the court rejects the proposal, a judge may order the state to produce an alternative map. The decision will set a precedent for how states handle contested districting. For Boone County and the rest of Missouri, the outcome will determine who speaks for them in Washington and could influence national politics for years to come.
