Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile faces treason charges after arrest

Zambian opposition leader Brian Mundubile has been charged with treason, according to his lawyer, amid escalating political tensions in the country. Mundubile was arrested on Thursday after a deadly raid by authorities prompted him to go into hiding. His arrest follows his outspoken challenge to the results of the recent presidential election, which saw incumbent President Hakainde Hichilema secure a second term.

The situation has intensified since the August 13 election, where Mundubile received 38% of the vote compared to Hichilema's 60%. Following the election, security forces raided a property linked to Mundubile in Lusaka, resulting in the death of a former cabinet minister and the arrest of other politicians. In the wake of this raid, Mundubile sought refuge, along with his running mate Makebi Zulu, in a United Nations building. However, they were later detained after the Zambian government pressured the UN to hand them over. The opposition has claimed that authorities are attempting to stifle dissent and prevent any legal challenges to the election results, as courts were sealed off just before the deadline for filing claims.

Mundubile's lawyer, Milner Katolo, confirmed that 17 others, including Zulu, have also been charged with treason. Katolo stated that his client looks forward to addressing the charges in court. The treason allegations stem from accusations that Mundubile's NRPUP party was planning an armed insurgency, claims the party has vehemently denied.

As President Hichilema prepares to be sworn in for a second term on September 1, the international community is watching closely. While regional observers noted that the election day was largely peaceful, Zambia's Human Rights Commission has called for accountability regarding the whereabouts of individuals who remain missing following the raids. The ongoing political unrest highlights significant concerns over human rights and the future of democracy in Zambia.
