Liberal Democrat MP Anna Sabine said her voice is showing signs of recovery after a thyroid operation in June cut a nerve that controls her vocal cords. The 46โyearโold, who represents Frome and East Somerset, lost her speaking ability for months and had to rely on a microphone in Parliament. She now reports that her voice is stronger and closer to normal.
The operation, carried out at a hospital in Bath, left Sabine with vocal cord paralysis. She woke up after surgery with a whispering voice and later learned the surgeon had caused permanent damage. The loss of her voice made her feel isolated and reluctant to speak in the House. She described the experience as exposing and lonely.
Sabine said she woke up a few weeks ago and found her voice had regained some natural strength. She told reporters that her family and friends noted the improvement. She still feels the voice is wobbly but believes it is back to where it should be. The MP said peopleโs emails and media appearances had encouraged her to return to the chamber.
She plans to launch a campaign for better therapy options for adults with similar injuries. Sabine said the recovery is a reminder of the importance of vocal health for public servants. The MPโs experience may prompt Parliament to review surgical safety and postโoperative support for members.
