Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang clarified on Monday that the company's recent $3.5 billion investment in MediaTek is not an example of circular financing, which often raises investor concerns. During an interview with Bloomberg, Huang asserted that MediaTek operates independently and is already a highly profitable firm. He emphasized that both companies maintain their distinct business operations, underscoring the legitimacy of the investment.
The deal involves Nvidia purchasing $3.5 billion in convertible bonds from MediaTek, rather than acquiring equity in the company. This transaction is part of a larger convertible bond offering totaling approximately $3.9 billion, which also includes participation from Alphabet, though the specifics of their investment remain undisclosed. The absence of conversion price or resulting stake details in the announcement has led to some scrutiny, but Huang is adamant that the structure of the deal does not suggest any circular financing.
The partnership aims to enhance collaboration between the two companies. MediaTek plans to implement Nvidiaโs NVLink Fusion technology, allowing customers to create custom accelerators for Nvidia's systems. Additionally, the firms will co-develop chips for Nvidia's desktop AI machines, leveraging their previous work on the Grace Blackwell superchip. MediaTek's Dimensity Auto platforms will also integrate Nvidia graphics, marking a significant extension of their existing partnership.
Huang's comments come at a time when Nvidia has engaged in several high-profile deals, including commitments to AI startups and significant investments in companies like Intel. Unlike some of these partnerships, which do raise questions about financial interdependence, Huang insists that MediaTek's established market position differentiates this deal. His remarks aim to reassure investors and stakeholders that this investment is a strategic move rather than a financial maneuver that could distort revenue figures.
