Key Points Visa's new stablecoin platform hands banks a ready-made toolkit for minting, holding, and moving digital dollars. Merchants receive local currency automatically, so nobody has to talk a coffee shop into accepting Bitcoin. Over 160 stablecoin-linked card programs are live worldwide, with volume in this category up nearly 200% year over year. 10 stocks we like better than Visa โ€บ Back in 2021, banks treated crypto like radioactive waste. Fast forward to 2026, and financial giant Visa (NYSE: V) isn't just dipping a toe in -- it's basically cannonballing into the deep end of the stablecoin pool . Here's what Visa has done recently, and why it's huge for anyone holding crypto. Missed AIโ€™s "Act 1"? Act 2 Could Be 15x Bigger. Most investors think they missed the AI boat because they didn't buy Nvidia in 2005. But according to our analysts, weโ€™re only at the end of "Act 1"โ€”the R&D phase. "Act 2" is the global rollout. Continue ยป 1. Visa built the "operating system" for banks (VSP) In July, Visa introduced the Visa Stablecoin Platform (VSP). Think of it as a plug-and-play stablecoin toolkit for traditional banks and fintechs. Instead of traditional institutions sweating over managing private keys, setting up multi-sig wallets, or figuring out how to mint and burn tokens, Visa handed them a slick "Wallet-as-a-Service." Starting with Open USD , an upcoming token, Visa will also support the popular USDC (CRYPTO: USDC) coin later this year. Banks can now hold, move, and settle stablecoins using the same enterprise-grade security tools they're already comfortable with. It's in beta testing for now, pending the Open USD launch. When crypto card issuers grow quickly, they face working capital crunches as they wait for cardholder funds and transactions to settle. To address this, Visa is pairing real-time VisaNet settlement data with smart contracts. This way, blockchain lenders can assess live settlement performance and extend short-term credit on the blockchain. The early test case is Visa's work with Credit Coop, a platform that finances stablecoin-linked card programs. Since 2023, that model has supported more than $2.5 billion in cumulative settlement financing with zero defaults across participating facilities. Repayment is enforced directly from the settlement flow, and the smart contracts have handled more than 3,000 borrowing events and 9,000 repayments on-chain. 3. Visa's stablecoin ambitions are growing fast This isn't a pilot project in a sandbox anymore: Over 160 stablecoin-linked card programs are live globally. Stablecoin-linked card payment volume is up nearly 200% year over year. Visa's stablecoin settlement volume just blew past a $20 billion annualized run rate. That's more than 15 times higher in a single year. What does this actually mean for crypto holders? Selling crypto on an exchange used to be a stressful experience. It involved waiting three days for an ACH transfer from the bank, then hoping your bank didn't freeze your account for "suspicious activity." Things are different in 2026. You can keep your wealth in stablecoins on-chain and simply swipe a Visa card anywhere it's accepted. In short, there's less friction in moving cash between the traditional banking systems and newfangled crypto platforms. Merchants don't even know you're using crypto. You don't have to convince your local coffee shop or airline to accept Dogecoin (CRYPTO: DOGE) or Bitcoin (CRYPTO: BTC) . You spend cash-like stablecoins; Visa's infrastructure handles conversion and settlement, and the merchant receives their local fiat payment seamlessly. Visa's on-chain analytics dashboard tracks the whole industry. It filters out all the bot-powered wash trading and still displays over $350 billion per month in genuine, organic stablecoin payment volume. The company isn't building this crypto-based settlement service because it's a novelty. Stablecoins are quietly becoming the internet's primary settlement layer. Regulators are still writing the rules for stablecoin issuance and reserves, though, and that framework could reshape how fast this expands. The takeaway is simple. Visa realized it can't beat public blockchains, so the company is turning them into a next-gen settlement network. For consumers, digital dollars are finally as spendable and liquid as cash in a wallet. Should you buy stock in Visa right now?
