Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez announced on Monday that Spain will hold a snap general election on 29 November, hoping to shore up his party’s shaky majority after lawmakers rejected key housing reforms last week. The decision follows weeks of nationwide protests over soaring rents and a housing crisis that has left many Spaniards feeling powerless.

Sánchez’s move comes as the country’s political climate grows increasingly volatile. The ruling Spanish Socialist Workers’ Party (PSOE) has struggled to secure the support of other left‑wing parties, and the opposition has been quick to exploit the housing debate to rally voters. By calling an early vote, Sánchez aims to capture the momentum of the protests and present himself as a champion for the working class, hoping to turn public frustration into electoral support.

Analysts say the timing is deliberate. Javier Carbonell, a policy analyst at the European Policy Centre, told France 24 that Sánchez is “choosing the best moment in a sea of troubles” to call the election, banking on the mobilisation of left‑wing voters. Carbonell added that the housing crisis has become a rallying point for the opposition, and that the ruling party sees a snap election as a way to reset the political landscape before the protests lose steam. The move also puts pressure on the opposition to coalesce around a single platform, potentially weakening their fragmented stance.

The early election will force parties to decide quickly whether to form coalitions or stand alone. If PSOE can secure a broader left‑wing alliance, it may regain a majority in the 350‑seat Congress. If not, the opposition could consolidate power and push for a more radical housing agenda. The outcome will shape Spain’s policy direction for the next four years and influence the EU’s stance on social housing standards, making the November vote a pivotal moment for the country’s future.
