Researchers at Kyushu University have discovered that wharf roaches, common scavengers found along shorelines, exhibit biological changes after consuming expanded polystyrene (EPS), a type of plastic foam. The study, published in the Marine Pollution Bulletin, highlights the potential impacts of plastic waste on marine ecosystems. The research team observed that while the lifespan of these roaches did not significantly decrease, their gut health showed notable alterations.
The need for this study arises from growing concerns about the widespread presence of microplastics and foam debris in marine environments. As plastic pollution increases, its effects on various species become increasingly important to understand. Wharf roaches, which play a role in the decomposition and recycling of organic materials along coastlines, provide a critical opportunity to examine how consumption of non-biodegradable materials affects marine life.
The researchers noted changes in the gene expression of the roaches that consumed EPS. Genes linked to chemical defense, DNA repair, and digestion were altered, indicating that even if the roaches do not suffer immediate mortality, their biological functions may be compromised. Additionally, while the overall gut microbiome of the roaches showed little change, several rare microbes were found exclusively in those that consumed EPS, suggesting a potential shift in microbial communities due to plastic ingestion.
