If you skipped upgrading your Android phone this year, five upcoming models could make the wait worth it, according to Android Authority. Samsungโ€™s Galaxyโ€ฏS24, Googleโ€™s Pixelโ€ฏ8โ€ฏPro, OnePlusโ€ฏ12, Xiaomiโ€ฏ14 and Motorolaโ€™s Edgeโ€ฏ40 are slated for release between October 2024 and early 2025. All promise major upgrades in camera tech, battery life and AIโ€‘driven software, and they arrive at a time when many users are looking to replace devices that are out of warranty.

The market has been unusually quiet this year because of lingering chip shortages and higher inflation that forced many consumers to stretch the life of their current phones. Manufacturers responded by delaying some flagship launches and focusing on midโ€‘range updates instead. As supply chains stabilise, brands are now pushing premium hardware that leverages newer Snapdragonโ€ฏ8โ€ฏGenโ€ฏ3 and MediaTek Dimensityโ€ฏ9400โ€‘plus processors, which were scarce earlier in the year. The timing also aligns with the end of most threeโ€‘year upgrade cycles, meaning a larger pool of potential buyers will be ready to spend.

Samsungโ€™s Galaxyโ€ฏS24 will debut in late October with a 200โ€ฏMP main sensor, a 120โ€ฏHz LTPO display and a 5,000โ€ฏmAh battery that promises up to two days of mixed use. Googleโ€™s Pixelโ€ฏ8โ€ฏPro, arriving in November, adds a custom Tensorโ€ฏG3 chip and a new โ€œSuper Res Zoomโ€ feature that rivals dedicated cameras. OnePlusโ€ฏ12, expected in December, focuses on speed with a 150โ€ฏW fastโ€‘charge system and a 6.8โ€‘inch 144โ€ฏHz screen. Xiaomiโ€™s 14, slated for January, brings a 6.9โ€‘inch AMOLED panel, a 108โ€ฏMP camera and a price tag that undercuts most rivals. Motorolaโ€™s Edgeโ€ฏ40, due in February, targets the midโ€‘range segment with a 50โ€ฏW charger, a 6.5โ€‘inch 120โ€ฏHz display and a clean Androidโ€ฏ15 experience. Early leaks suggest all five phones will ship with Androidโ€ฏ15 and receive at least three years of security updates, a selling point for longโ€‘term owners.

Consumers can expect preโ€‘orders to open a few weeks before each launch, with carriers and online retailers offering tradeโ€‘in deals to ease the upgrade cost. Analysts predict that the combined sales of these devices could push global Android shipments back above 300โ€ฏmillion units for the year, reversing the modest decline seen in 2023. If youโ€™ve been holding onto an older phone, the upcoming lineโ€‘up offers compelling reasons to finally make the switch, especially as software support and hardware performance converge at a higher level than seen in recent years.
