The Galaxy S27 Ultra may debut with self-healing glass

The Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra may introduce an interesting feature that sounds like it could be a real benefit to users. A rumor from this weekend claims that Samsung’s upcoming Ultra flagship will come with self-healing glass that’s able to recover from minor scratches on its own.

Late last week, industry observer Schrödinger took to X to say that Corning and Samsung are jointly working on “ a new self-healing surface coating” for the next iteration of the former’s Gorilla Armor glass. This coating would certainly be less scratch-resistant than conventional tempered glass, but if it’s able to fill in hairline scratches on its own, that trade-off could be worth it.

Schrödinger doesn’t say much more about the initiative — we don’t know how long development has been ongoing, or whether any of this self-healing glass has actually been produced, or what Samsung and Corning might brand the new glass. The tweet does imply that, in the future, Corning may lean into healing properties as a selling point for Gorilla Glass generally, but it’s too early to know whether that’s true.

We also don’t know for sure where on the phone Samsung might use this new glass. Schrödinger doesn’t explicitly say it’s meant for the S27 Ultra’s display, so it’s possible the self-healing coating could end up on the back of the phone, but not the screen.

The concept of materials that can “heal” on their own might sound futuristic, but it’s not a new idea. Way back in 2015, LG’s G Flex 2 came with a self-healing back panel that, given time, would shift to fill in minor scratches. At the time, Android Authority ‘s review of the phone noted that the plasticky self-healing material attracted fingerprints and dust, but the tech has presumably evolved over the past decade and change.

Earlier today, leaked Galaxy S27 Ultra renders showed that aside from a new, iPhone-style camera plateau, Samsung may keep the new model’s external hardware very similar to what we got in this year’s S26 Ultra. Of course, self-healing glass would be a notable change, though not one that would show up in renders.

We’re expecting Samsung will publicly detail its next S-series flagships at an event in early 2027.
