Four activists remain in pre-trial detention in Tunisia over their involvement in a pro-Palestinian flotilla, with one of them, Wael Naouar, suffering severe health consequences from a hunger strike that has lasted more than three weeks. Naouar, a member of the Global Sumud Flotilla's steering committee, began his protest on August 16 against his ongoing detention, which has now raised alarms about his well-being.

The arrests began six months ago as part of a judicial investigation into alleged "suspicious financial flows" linked to the flotilla's organizers. This inquiry was ordered by Tunisiaโ€™s Economic and Financial Judicial Pole, which specializes in serious economic cases. While initially seven activists were detained, three have since been released, leaving Naouar alongside Nabil Channoufi, Ghassan Henchiri, and Ghassan Boughdiri still in custody. None of the detainees have been formally charged, but they face allegations of money laundering and other financial misconduct.

Naouar's attorney, Bassem Trifi, who also leads the Tunisian League for Human Rights, reported that Naouar has lost 18 kg (40 lb) and is experiencing critical health issues, including low blood pressure and difficulty breathing. Trifi described Naouar's condition as โ€œvery seriousโ€ following a recent prison visit. Supporters, like activist Anis Harrathi, indicate that Naouar's hunger strike is not just a personal protest but a stand against a broader system that they believe seeks to suppress dissent and criminalize solidarity with Palestine.

The case has ignited discussions about civil liberties in Tunisia, particularly concerning political activism and freedom of expression. As the judicial investigation continues, the fate of Naouar and the other activists remains uncertain. Their situation highlights a growing concern over how dissent is treated in the country, raising questions about the implications for civil society and activism in Tunisia.
