The Welsh government is considering a ban on the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks to children under 16. This proposal comes amid growing concerns about the negative health effects associated with these beverages. Young people and health experts in Wales have expressed strong support for the measure, which aims to protect the health of minors.

The move follows a similar ban in England, where drinks such as Red Bull and Monster will be illegal for sale to those under 16 starting in April 2024. The Welsh government cites evidence linking high-caffeine drinks to issues such as obesity, disrupted sleep, and anxiety, all of which are particularly concerning for young people as their bodies and brains are still developing. Currently, any drink exceeding 150mg of caffeine per liter must carry a warning label indicating it is not recommended for children or pregnant women.

Responses from young people in Cardiff highlight a recognition of the problem. A 17-year-old named Vee welcomed the proposed ban, while her peer Sunny, age 16, suggested that opting for coffee would be a healthier alternative. Critics, including the British Soft Drinks Association, argue that the ban is unnecessary and lacks robust evidence of harm from these drinks. However, nutritionists emphasize that excessive caffeine can lead to serious health issues such as rapid heart rates and seizures, as well as contributing to obesity and dental problems through high sugar content.

Experts like Aisling Pigott, a registered dietitian, believe the ban is overdue but a step in the right direction. They emphasize that while caffeine can provide a temporary boost in concentration, it often leads to a crash, impacting young people's overall nutrition and well-being. The proposed legislation reflects a growing awareness of the need to safeguard the health of children and adolescents in Wales.
