US strikes Iranian IRGC facilities

The U.S. military struck targets inside Iran again on Tuesday, the latest round in a months-long cycle of escalation that began after the October 7 Hamas attacks on Israel. American forces targeted Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) facilities, including air defenses, radar systems, maritime assets, mine-laying capabilities and communications sites, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) said. The strikes follow weeks of rising tensions, including a direct Iranian missile and drone assault on Israel in April and a series of tit-for-tat strikes across the region.

This round of strikes comes as the Biden administration tries to balance deterrence with de-escalation. Iran’s support for proxy groups like Hezbollah, Hamas and the Houthis has drawn repeated U.S. responses, including the January killing of IRGC Quds Force commander Qasem Soleimani’s successor, Brig. Gen. Mohammad Reza Zahedi, in Damascus. Israel’s ongoing war in Gaza and its strikes on Iranian proxies in Lebanon and Syria have kept pressure high. Iran has vowed revenge but so far avoided a direct, large-scale confrontation, instead relying on proxies to harass shipping lanes and launch rockets at U.S. bases in Iraq and Syria.

Tuesday’s strikes were smaller and more precise than earlier rounds, according to military officials, aimed at degrading Iran’s ability to threaten shipping in the Strait of Hormuz and project power across the region. Iran’s navy and air defenses have been degraded over time, but the IRGC still maintains significant influence in Iraq, Syria and Yemen. The U.S. has around 30,000 troops deployed across the Middle East, and Iran has repeatedly warned that further strikes could trigger a wider conflict. Regional analysts say both sides are testing limits without fully crossing them.

What happens next depends on Iran’s response. If Tehran retaliates through proxies, the U.S. could escalate again, possibly targeting IRGC leadership or nuclear-related sites. If Iran holds back, Washington may seek to stabilize the situation through backchannel talks. Either way, the strikes signal that the U.S. is not backing down—but it’s also not trying to force Iran to the negotiating table, as President Donald Trump suggested in a statement Tuesday. The longer this cycle continues, the higher the risk of miscalculation—and the harder it becomes to pull back.
