The USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier returned to port on Thursday, ending a nine-month deployment that set a record for the longest continuous stint at sea by a U.S. Navy carrier in more than 40 years.

The record run followed a surge of operational demand that pushed the carrier and its crew beyond planned timelines. Tensions with Iran in the Middle East, rising global instability, and the Navy’s focus on maintaining a constant forward presence all contributed to keeping the Lincoln at sea longer than expected. Crew fatigue and concerns about living conditions on board have been reported, with sailors citing cramped berthing, limited access to fresh food, and extended work rotations.

The Lincoln docked in Norfolk, Virginia, where the Navy planned crew rotations and maintenance. Officials acknowledged the strain on personnel but said the carrier had accomplished key missions, including combat operations in the Middle East and joint exercises with allies. Family members of the crew gathered at the pier, many relieved after months without in-person contact. One sailor’s spouse told NBC News she hadn’t seen her husband since December and relied on video calls to stay connected.

The Navy now faces pressure to adjust deployment schedules to prevent burnout and retain experienced sailors. Plans are underway to conduct a thorough crew reset, including rest periods and access to mental health support. The Lincoln’s extended deployment highlights broader challenges in the fleet’s ability to balance operational demands with crew welfare, especially as global tensions remain high.
