Continue ยป No longer banking on banking In December 2025, Enova announced it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Grasshopper Bancorp, the holding company for a Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)-insured online lender Grasshopper Bank. Around that time, Enova submitted a clutch of applications to federal and state authorities for it to provide banking services as Grasshopper's would-be owner. Image source: Getty Images. Enova said the decision was in the best interests of the company and its investors. It cited a lack of clarity in the authorization process as a roadblock for its ambition. It quoted CEO Steve Cunningham as saying that "Bank regulatory guidelines and attitudes have not kept pace with the realities of meeting the credit needs of tens of millions of consumers and small businesses underserved by traditional banks." "Our future growth and success do not depend on becoming a bank," Cunningham added. Penalty for early withdrawal Enova pledged to leverage its operational strengths, namely what it considers to be its straightforward business strategy and effective workforce, to continue serving its chosen customer segments. Backing this up, it reiterated its existing guidance both for the current (third) quarter and full-year 2026. For the latter period, it's forecasting revenue growth of 20% to 25% over 2025, and a rise in adjusted net income per share of 30% to 35%. That withdrawal isn't going down well with investors, and that's understandable, given the numerous benefits of operating as a licensed bank. That said, if Enova can even come close to posting those anticipated growth rates, perhaps a license isn't necessary after all. Should you buy stock in Enova International right now?
