Grocery Outlet shares surged on Thursday after the discount retailer raised its full-year sales and profit forecasts, signaling a positive shift in its business strategy. The company reported that its net sales increased by 1.1% to $1.2 billion for the fiscal second quarter, which ended on July 4. This uptick was largely attributed to the opening of ten new locations, even as Grocery Outlet closed twelve underperforming stores as part of its ongoing optimization plan.
The timing of this announcement comes as Grocery Outlet seeks to improve its performance following a challenging period. The company's efforts to enhance its product offerings and strengthen customer value perception are beginning to show results. CEO Jason Potter noted that the second-quarter results exceeded expectations, which is crucial for restoring investor confidence and stabilizing the company's financial footing.
Grocery Outlet's adjusted net income for the quarter was $20.3 million, or $0.20 per share, which, while down from $22.8 million, or $0.23 per share, last year, still surpassed Wall Street projections of $0.12 per share. As part of its revised outlook, Grocery Outlet raised the lower end of its annual net sales forecast from $4.6 billion to $4.7 billion. It also improved its comparable-store sales forecast, indicating a shift toward less negative growth, now projected at negative 0.25%, up from negative 2%.
Looking ahead, the company's restructuring plan is expected to reduce charges starting in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, as it completes the closure of the 36 underperforming stores identified earlier this year. Management anticipates adjusted earnings per share between $0.51 and $0.55 for fiscal 2026, which could further bolster investor interest. As Grocery Outlet continues to refine its strategy, its ability to adapt and grow in a competitive retail landscape will be closely watched by analysts and investors alike.
