YouTube’s interface has become something of a moving target lately. The company was only recently testing a new button arrangement on Android that removed text labels from the controls under videos. And now, a small change to how YouTube shows skipped time appears to be rolling out to some Android users.
The change involves YouTube’s familiar double-tap gesture for skipping. Currently, you can double-tap the right side of the screen to jump forward or the left side to rewind, while touching and holding the scrub bar lets you manually move through the video. In the current UI, double-tapping skips forward or backward without showing how much time you’ve moved. When manually scrubbing, however, YouTube displays the amount of time you’ve skipped in the video interface, as seen in the screenshot below.
The new UI adds another layer to that first interaction. Double-tapping either side of the video now brings up the scrub bar and shows the amount of time you’ve skipped in a red indicator on the timeline.
The manual scrubbing experience appears unchanged, with the skipped time still displayed in the video interface as you drag the bar.
The current gesture is simple enough that most users probably already know whether they’ve skipped forward or backward. However, the extra feedback in the new UI could be more informative without requiring any additional interaction.
We spotted the new behavior on multiple devices, including the Pixel 11 Pro, Pixel 10 Pro, and Galaxy Z Fold 7, all running the latest stable YouTube v21.33. However, other devices running the same version still show the old behavior. That suggests Google may be enabling the change server-side for selected users or devices rather than tying it strictly to the app version.
The timing is interesting, too. YouTube recently teased a cleaner immersive player alongside redesigned library and account sections. This seek UI could fit that broader push, but there’s no evidence connecting the two.
