Iowa, once the nationโs most windโpowered state, has added a new coal unit to its power grid to meet the surge in electricity demand from artificialโintelligence data centers. The move comes after the stateโs utilities announced a 600โmegawatt coal plant that will run alongside the existing wind farms to provide steady baseโload power.
For more than two decades Iowaโs power mix shifted from coal to wind. In 2000 the stateโs utilities began installing wind turbines, and by 2023 wind accounted for about 65โฏ% of electricity generation. Coal fell from 70โฏ% of the mix in 2000 to less than 10โฏ% in 2023. But the rapid growth of AI has changed the energy equation. Data centers that train machineโlearning models need constant, highโcapacity power. Iowaโs electricity consumption rose by 12โฏ% in the past year, and the stateโs renewable sources alone cannot guarantee the reliability required for 24โhour operation.
The new coal plant, built by Midwest Power Partners, will operate at 400โฏMW and is expected to run continuously, producing roughly 3.5โฏbillion kilowattโhours annually. The plantโs cost is about $1.2โฏbillion, with a projected cost of $0.05 per megawattโhourโlower than the price of new solar or wind projects that require expensive storage to smooth out supply. Environmental groups have criticized the decision, arguing that it undermines Iowaโs climate goals and will increase carbon emissions by an estimated 1.2โฏmillion tonnes of COโ annually. State officials say the plant is a temporary measure until the grid can be upgraded with battery storage and more solar capacity.
If the coal unit is activated, Iowa will be one of several states that rely on fossil fuels to back up renewable energy while meeting the needs of highโintensity power consumers. The decision highlights a national dilemma: as AI and other dataโheavy industries grow, the demand for reliable power can outpace the capacity of intermittent renewables. Iowaโs next steps will likely involve a mix of new storage projects, grid modernization, and policy incentives to keep the state on a lowโcarbon trajectory while satisfying the energy needs of the tech sector.
