Google Messages has introduced a long-awaited customization feature that allows users to personalize their chat themes. This update, rolling out in late August 2026, finally enables users to customize the look of their messaging experience. This addition comes after years of requests from users who have sought more personalization options within the app.

The new chat themes are available to users who have updated their Google Messages app and have RCS (Rich Communication Services) enabled. To check for updates, users can navigate to the Google Play Store, select their profile icon, and look for available updates. The feature is compatible with both stable and beta versions of the app, making it accessible to a wide range of users. Once RCS is enabled, users can dive into the customization options, which include changing chat colors and selecting wallpapers.

Customization options include eight different color styles that alter the conversation background and chat bubbles. Additionally, users can choose from a selection of pre-set wallpapers organized into categories like Animals, Landscapes, and Architecture. For those looking for something more personal, the app allows users to select any image from their phone or Google Photos to use as a chat background. It is important to note that these changes are only visible to the user making them, meaning that chat partners will not see the customized settings.

This update reflects Google's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience in its messaging app. By introducing these customization options, Google aims to compete more effectively with other messaging platforms that have offered similar features for some time. As personalization becomes increasingly important to users, this new capability could strengthen Google Messages' position in the crowded messaging app market.
