A sheriffโ€™s office in South Carolina announced that a man was arrested after police found his motherโ€™s charred remains in a burn pit near her home. The suspect, who was already serving a sentence for child neglect, allegedly killed his mother and set her body on fire before he began his new prison term.

The case came to light after the mother, 72, went missing in late January. Neighbors reported her car parked on the curb and a foul odor coming from the yard. A search team found a shallow pit in the backyard, and forensic investigators recovered burned human remains that matched the missing woman. The sheriffโ€™s office said the suspect had been in a state facility for the past year after a 2019 conviction for failing to provide adequate care for his 10โ€‘yearโ€‘old son. He was scheduled to be transferred to a different prison in early March when the investigation began.

Police say the evidence points to homicide. The suspect was taken into custody at the state penitentiary, where he was denied access to a lawyer until the next morning. The sheriffโ€™s office released a statement saying the investigation is ongoing and that the state attorneyโ€™s office will determine whether to file murder charges. The department also noted that the suspect had a history of violent outbursts and had previously been placed on a โ€œhighโ€‘riskโ€ list for potential domestic violence. The motherโ€™s family has requested that the case be treated with sensitivity, but the sheriffโ€™s office emphasized that all evidence will be handled according to state law.

If the state prosecutors file a murder charge, the suspect will face a new trial separate from his existing childโ€‘neglect case. The outcome could determine whether he remains in a maximumโ€‘security facility or is transferred to a different jurisdiction. The case has drawn attention to the challenges of monitoring inmates who have a history of violence, especially when they are released or moved between facilities. Authorities say they are reviewing protocols to prevent similar incidents in the future.
