Scientists have confirmed that the mushroom Lanmaoa asiatica is behind vivid hallucinations of hundreds of tiny, colorful humans reported after eating wild fungi in parts of China and the Philippines. The finding comes after a team of mycologists and neurologists collected and analyzed samples from three recent poisoning incidents in Guangdong province and the island of Luzon. The researchers published their results in the journal *Neuropharmacology* on Monday, linking the visual phenomenon to a previously unknown psychoactive compound in the mushroomโ€™s flesh.

The strange visions have been part of local folklore for almost a century, described in travelogues and oral histories as โ€œfairy mushroomsโ€ that let people see hidden beings. Modern doctors have treated the episodes as rare cases of mushroom poisoning, but the lack of a clear cause left many patients without guidance. In the past five years, emergency rooms in Guangzhou and Manila recorded a 40โ€ฏ% rise in unexplained visual disturbances after mushroom foraging, prompting health officials to launch an investigation. Laboratory analysis showed that Lanmaoa asiatica contains a mix of muscarine and a novel indole alkaloid that stimulates the visual cortex, producing the miniature human figures. The compound is chemically distinct from psilocybin, which explains why the hallucinations differ from classic โ€œmagic mushroomโ€ trips.

Health authorities are now issuing advisories to discourage casual collection of wild boletes, especially in regions where the mushroom grows near pine forests. The research team plans field studies to map the distribution of Lanmaoa asiatica and to test the new alkaloidโ€™s effects in animal models. Local communities are being educated about the risks, and traditional foragers are urged to seek guidance from certified mycologists. If the compound proves safe in controlled settings, it could open a new line of study into visual perception, but for now the priority is preventing accidental ingestion and reducing hospital visits.
