What really was the Cold War and why did it end so suddenly?
Still trying to wrap my head around this stuff but what really was the Cold War? Like, was it just a constant fear of nuclear war between the US and the Soviets? I get that there was a whole ideological aspect with capitalism vs communism and the whole Red Scare, but I don't quite understand what sparked it all and what made it come to an end in the early 90s. I recently read somewhere that there was a significant thaw in relations around 1985-86, but I'm not really clear on the context of that or what happened afterwards. Anyone else have a good grasp of the whole thing and can explain it to me in simple terms?

idk if this has been pointed out but maybe we're misunderstanding the end of the cold war as a 'sudden' event when really it was more like a delayed reaction to the Soviet Union's systemic exhaustion from 1980s reforms under gorbachev.

Yeah id push back on that a little, i mean we cant just forget about glasnost and perestroika, brezhnev was already showing signs of weakening by the mid 80s and gorbachev taking over in 85 was like the final nail in the coffin, the soviet economy was in shambles and thats what really made mikhail surrender, all this rhetoric about ending the cold war was just a convenient excuse to cover up their own downfall

um i think the idea that we just kinda assumed the cold war ended is actually way too simplistic idk about you guys but dont think we've ever actually been taught the context behind the whole perestroika thing is that really just gonna be glossed over because we dont know the details or something

So what makes you think we're misunderstanding the end of the cold war is it something specific you've come across that makes you think it wasnt as cut and dry as a sudden collapse *(edited)*

End of cold war wasnt so sudden when you consider the soviet economic crisis that began in late 80s
