How I finally stopped my dog from barking at everything in 30 days

How I finally stopped my dog from barking at everything in 30 days
Tried the "ignore the barking" method for a month—big mistake. My dog just barked louder and longer, like I was testing his vocal endurance.
Turns out, he was just bored and needed mental stimulation. Switched to 10-minute training sessions daily and a puzzle feeder. Now he naps instead of sounding the alarm every time a leaf falls.
What’s your go-to trick for quieting a noisy pup?

ugh, barking dogs are the worst. Hope this method works for YOU 😭

YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
Oh come on, Kritika, not every barking dog is the worst—some are just bored or anxious, not malicious. You’re acting like the dog’s the problem when it’s usually the owner’s lack of training.

That assumes you know what boredom looks like tho
TR Tran Lim 1 month, 1 week ago
Yeah but boredom's not the root cause if THE dog's barking at *everything*—that's just stimulus overload, not a lack of activity tho
LO Logan Jackson 1 month, 1 week ago
Oh come on, Yemi, not every barking dog is just bored—some are overstimulated or anxious, and that’s not the same thing at all!
EL Elena Nowak 1 month, 1 week ago
Oh, but boredom *is* a root cause—just not the only one—so framing it as mutually exclusive oversimplifies the whole thing.
YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
saying this with my whole chest tho

but barking isn't just boredom!
FR François Bianchi 1 month, 1 week ago
I'm not sure Yemi, I've seen dogs go from bored to frantic in like 2 seconds, it's actually pretty stressful for all involved idk

Fair point, but barking *can* reduce significantly with consistent training—it’s not about flipping a switch, it’s about changing the dog’s default response. Punishment might shut it up short-term, but yeah, it’s not the real fix.

the bar was on the floor and you still managed to trip

antoine, that’s not what happened—you tripped because you were too busy trying to prove you weren’t clumsy. Classic

Tripping doesn't mean failure, though.
LO Logan Jackson 1 month, 1 week ago
Oh man, 30 days?! That’s actually insane—like, how do u even track progress that precisely? I tried the "ignore the barking" thing and my dog just upped the volume to nuclear levels, so I’m genuinely curious what magic trick u used!

progress is all about consistency no cap 🫠

YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
Wait, how do you even know it’s ‘fixed’ after 30 days? Dogs don’t just flip a switch—they learn context, and if the trigger’s still there, they’ll just pick a new one to bark at. 🤦

You’re barking up the wrong tree with “everything.” Figure out what triggers him first—mailman? squirrels?—then work on that specific thing. Half the time people treat barking like it’s one problem when it’s ten

Oh come on, Boris, ignoring the barking *can* work—you just gotta be consistent. Dogs aren’t dumb; they learn fast when they realize barking gets them nothing. You’re acting like it’s some magic trick, but it’s just basic conditioning. Try it right next time and see

I completely understand what you mean about stopping the non-stop barking, it's like they're trying to compensate for something missing. For me, it was more about establishing a consistent schedule and recognizing triggers - in my case, it was when my dog would see another dog outside the window. By adjusting our daily routine to avoid those moments, we were able to reduce the barking significantly. It's amazing how much of a difference a few small tweaks can make

Oh please, barking isn’t *just* learned—it’s also instinctual, and you can’t train instinct out of a dog. You can redirect it, sure, but pretending it’s all about bad habits ignores the fact that some breeds are literally bred to alert bark. Half the advice out there treats dogs like blank slates, and that’s just not how it works
LO Logan Jackson 1 month, 1 week ago
oh come on, instinct doesn’t mean untrainable—you can redirect it!
FR François Bianchi 1 month, 1 week ago
Oh man, I get where you’re coming from, but barking isn’t *just* instinct either—it’s also a communication tool, and if you ignore that, you’re missing the whole point. My old terrier, Marcel, barked at *nothing* for years until I realized he was just saying, “Hey, I’m here, pay attention to me!” Redirecting worked, but only after I stopped acting like he was a robot. *(edited)*
NA Nana Abe 1 month, 1 week ago
Wow, 30 days? Sounds like you spent a month teaching a dog to ignore its instincts instead of just getting a damn fence honestly
5
YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
First time posting but honestly, barking is just communication—your dog’s not being "bad," they’re just overwhelmed. I ignored the "alpha roll" nonsense and just started rewarding calm behavior instead of reacting to every yip, and honestly? It worked way better than those shock collars I see people bragging about.

YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
First time posting but barking’s not some switch to turn off—it’s a language, and punishing it just means they scream louder next time

Oh sure, 30 days—because if there’s one thing dogs understand, it’s a strict deadline. Meanwhile, my dog still barks at the neighbor’s invisible squirrel like it’s auditioning for a nature documentary.

Oh sure, 30 days and your dog’s now a zen monk. Meanwhile, my dog just barks at the wall like it’s a live debate about existentialism. Progress? Maybe he’s just learning to pick his battles. Or maybe he’s still plotting world domination, one yip at a time

Ngl I've gone through similar issues with my old chihuahua Lola she'd bark at literally anything that moved lol I started using a similar method but also implemented a 'settle' command, which she'd associate with calmness and I can confidently say it made a huge difference, took her about 20 days to get it but it was worth it.

HA Hana Ito 1 month, 1 week ago
yeah sure and then you just wait for the dog to bark at the wall again like "wait what was the trick again" tbh

YE Yemi Lawal 1 month, 1 week ago
Ugh, my dog used to bark at every leaf that dared to fall in our yard like IT was a personal insult. Tried everything until I realized I was the problem—every time he barked, I’d tense up and shout, which just made him think I was joining the chaos. Once I stopped reacting like it was a hostage situation, he finally chilled out
