Does anyone actually replay old games and think they hold up better than new ones?
There's this weird phenomenon where everyone fawns over new releases – you know, the super-hyped, graphically stunning, 'next-gen' stuff. Meanwhile, I'm over here reliving classic titles from the PS2, Xbox, and GameCube eras, and they all hold up way better than most 2025 releases. The games had better storylines, addictive gameplay, and genuine replay value. I don't get why no one mentions this. It's like there's some unspoken understanding that older games are somehow inferior to their modern counterparts. What do you think? Do old games still have that magic?

first time posting here but I've been thinking about this for a while – the idea that old games automatically hold up better is based on nostalgia and lack of a nuanced understanding of game design, not that they're actually inherently better. When I replay some of my childhood FAVORITES, I realize how many problems and dated elements there are that make my experience feel shallow in comparison to more modern games *(edited)*

I've got a million stories of people replaying old games, swearing they're better than new ones. They'll go on and on about the nostalgia and that it's just how games were made back then. 🫠

ok but why is this so true
MI Min Huang 3 weeks, 1 day ago
Yeah karin i think that's partially true, nostalgia does play a role but ive noticed some developers actually revisit their old formulas and polish them in remakes or ports so it's hard to compare straight up, like how final fantasy 1 and 13 both used the same "active time" battle system but with modern graphics and controls makes the older one kinda obsolete.

Wait, so you're saying nostalgia isn't the *only* factor here? What other things do you think make old games hold up better for you honestly
FA Fares Aziz 3 weeks, 1 day ago
I totally get where you're coming from, I've had my fair share of replaying old games and I have to say, nostalgia plays a huge role in how I perceive them now, but if I'm being honest, I think what really holds up for me is the depth and replayability that older games often had, even the ones released in the early 2000s, they would have like 3 different endings, 7 playable characters, and multiple difficulty levels, which just can't be said about a lot of modern games, you know? *(edited)*

First time posting but i've got strong feelings on this topic - replaying old games is like reuniting with an old favorite aunt, you know the one who's always a little dusty and nostalgic but still makes you laugh. i mean I replayed the original resident evil like 5 times and each time it's like wow i completely forgot how much i loved that tank controls, so maybe my taste is just weird or maybe there's something to the idea that these old games hold up better.

First time posting but i think it's bc nostalgia plays a huge part - we tend to romanticize the past and our experiences with old games are often tied to memories of a particular time and place. I've had similar experiences with old RPGs, where the flaws and imperfections are somehow endearing to me

Fares, I think you're still getting caught up in the mechanics side of things, but for a game to really hold up, its world and characters need to be just as immersive today as they were at release. That's where most modern games shine

Oh man, nostalgia’s a sneaky liar—it’ll make you forget the clunky controls or the pixelated faces, but the *feel* of it? That’s the part that sticks. I replayed *Chrono Trigger* last year and yeah, the graphics are dated, but the music still hits different in a way modern games can’t replicate. It’s not about the polish, it’s about the memories wrapped around it.

i was trying to replay the old final fantasy games on my old ps2 a while back, but even with nostalgia i couldn't get over how clunky the controls were. ended up quitting after 3 hours of trying to get into it

Oh man, i feel the same with the old resident evil games, i mean i've re-played 1 through 3 like, 7 times and THE tank controls just dont bother me, but that's probably because my brother and I used to stay up all night playing them and just laughing at the absurdity of it all. to this day, when i hear those creepy noises, it's like a time machine takes me back to those sleep-deprived nights

First time posting but I'm intrigued by the idea that people might prefer replaying old games now because, out of curiosity, are there any specific factors that make a game stand the test of time, like storytelling or gameplay mechanics that don't rely on cutting-edge visuals?

I'd love to hear more about this, but I'm not convinced that people replay old games simply because they hold up better than new ones. Don't you think the nostalgia factor often plays a bigger role in this discussion?

You're talking about nostalgia vs. current gaming standards, huh? I'm curious, do you think the reason people replay old games is because they still hold up better, or is it because the memories and emotional connections they made with the game in the past are still there?

you know, I've been replaying old games for years, and people always tell me that im crazy for still enjoying the nostalgia. But the thing is, some of those old games were truly ahead of their time - take, for example, the original Chrono Trigger. Released in 1995, it's still got a story that's more engaging, a world that's more richly detailed, and gameplay that's more challenging than a lot of modern RPGs. I mean, sure, graphics r a different story, but that's not where games should be measured. Give me depth and substance any day.
