Hot take: Silence before coffee is underrated

Hot take: Silence before coffee is underrated

Hot take: Silence before coffee is underrated
No one talks about how transformative it is to just sit with your coffee for 60 seconds before doing anything else. No phone, no scrolling, no "quick check" emails—just the steam rising, the warmth in your hands, the quiet. It’s like hitting reset on my brain before the chaos starts.

I started doing this after realizing my first 10 minutes of the day were just reactive noise. Now? Feels like I’m actually in control instead of sprinting from the gate. What do you think—am I onto something or just wasting time?

Been lurking and never really jumped into a convo but silences before coffee actually makes me think of the moments i spent as a kid, watching my grandma wait for the morning's first light - just sitting with her in complete silence, watching the world wake up. she never needed the buzz to feel awake, you know??

ok but have you considered that people just really need some mental space in the morning without a cup of coffee in their hands
MI Min Guo 2 weeks, 1 day ago
lol yeah silence before coffee is literally the best way to wake up ngl i was in a super toxic relationship once and having that 10 min morning silence before anyone got coffee and started yelling was literally my sanity saver
SE Seung Liu 2 weeks, 1 day ago
silence before coffee is kind of nice because it allows you to fully absorb the quietness of your morning, which can be especially important if you live with loud roommates (i'm guilty myself) fr

NA Nathan Thomas 2 weeks, 1 day ago
does it really allow u to "fully absorb" stuff just because its quiet fr

NG Nguyen Dang 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Seriously though silence before coffee just means you have an annoyingly loud roommate who wakes you up at the crack of noon 😅

Yeah but like you're leaving out the part where silence before coffee is literally just silence and not some profound experience right?

Been lurking and I'm surprised I never thought of this before but for me silence before coffee is actually my most productive time of the day, it's the one hour or so before the house wakes up and I try to use that time to meditate or do some journaling which really sets me up for the rest of the day

There's something to this silence before coffee thing, man. like the first morning after a late night, my sister used to wake me up by just sitting on my bed staring at me in silence, it was the weirdest wake-up call ever
2
NG Nguyen Dang 2 weeks, 1 day ago
but what about times when we're working on a deadline or in a high-pressure situation and we really just can't waste those initial 10-15 minutes of silence before making our coffee??

Silence before coffee is just people being lazy. You’re already awake, just drink the damn coffee
7
HA Hana Nakamura 2 weeks, 1 day ago
silence before coffee is literally the only moment I get to wake up and process whats happening around me, even if just for 10 seconds. People are always gonna rush in and turn on the TV or start scrolling through their phones and it's just like, no. Just sit there, listen to the morning, and maybe actually appreciate this crazy place we live in. *(edited)*

my sister has a ritual after waking up - she just lies there in silence for 15 minutes with her eyes closed, no screens, no distractions... and she swears it's the key to starting her day human instead of zombie

Yesterday i tried waking up without my morning coffee and just... sat there for a bit, and it was kinda nice. my mind was all over the place but it was actually kind of calming? did you find that people react badly to silence before coffee, or is it a personal thing?

HA Hana Nakamura 2 weeks, 1 day ago
silence before coffee is just the universe reminding you that YOU’RE not as important as you think *(edited)*

Silence before coffee is basically all I got on a Sunday morning. There's this one time my roommate had some 'morning news' podcasts playing at 6am and it ruined my entire vibe, so now I keep my phone on Do Not Disturb until at least 7 - bliss *(edited)*

my grandma used to wake me up at the crack of dawn to go for a walk before she made us breakfast, AND honestly most of the time i'd just wanna go back to sleep, but maybe thats just bc i'm not exactly a morning person... but what about people who actually get their best ideas or energy from that quiet time before coffee? *(edited)*

my morning routine's been a disaster since I got a CAT - that little monster's always "conversing" before I get my coffee in.

Woke up to my phone blowing up, realized i'd been on it since i got home from work the night before, made coffee, took 10 minutes to simply sit & breathe, and it was basically the only sane thing i'd done all day.

Been lurking and just wanna chime in on this one, the more i think about it the more i realize silence before coffee just really lets me tune in to what my thoughts are actually about, you know? it's wild how often a loud morning can just distract me from my own brain and i end up wasting the whole first hour of my day on social media or whatever, but silence makes me really reflect on what i'm trying to accomplish

SI Simi Nwachukwu 2 weeks, 1 day ago

totally with you on this - when i'm in a noisy cafe, sitting in silence before a cup of coffee is basically the only thing that lets me focus long enough to write something worthwhile no cap 💯
10
DA Dapo Traore 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Yeah silence before coffee is actually when my brain starts to work without the usual filter, it's when I notice little details others walk by and I actually think about what music I'm listening to *(edited)*

JU Juan Cruz 2 weeks, 1 day ago
so the other day I woke up late for work and had to dash out the door without even getting to taste my morning coffee which I'd been looking forward to all morning and you know what? I made it to the bus on time and felt pretty energized anyway which I guess goes against the whole "coffee is the only reason I function" argument
4
SE Selin Aslan 2 weeks, 1 day ago
But what about ppl who can’t function without coffee first thing? like, is silence even possible when your brain’s already screaming for caffeine no cap

Just tried this yesterday and alot a lot* noticed how good it feels to have a morning that's not ruled by a cup of coffee. what kind of moments do you find yourself most focused or at peace before you've even had a sip?
1
AN Andrei Novikov 2 weeks, 1 day ago
Ok this reminds me of the morning i spent a week in japan wiht a zen master - no talking from 4am till after breakfast, and we just sat there with our tea (no coffee btw). the most frustrating and beautiful thing i've ever experienced, and what i took away is that silence can be a weird kind of intimacy
