How one financial mistake at 24 can cost you years to recover
I still think about that one decision I made at 24 when I impulsively invested 30k of my emergency fund into a get-rich-quick scheme. Now, at 32, I'm still paying off debts and trying to rebuild that safety net. The irony: my friends and family saw this coming and warned me, but I was too proud. It takes years to save, folks. If anyone has a similar story or a piece of financial advice to share, I'm all ears.

What about debt consolidation or taking advantage of 0% interest rates to pay down high interest loans idk if we're just talking about saving 500 a month here

yeah no, the whole "one mistake at 24 ruins you forever" is way overblown. Life isn’t some spreadsheet where one typo locks you out of compound interest for life. I blew my first real paycheck on a dumb car and..

Ok but people keep talking about making one financial mistake at 24 being some existential crisis and honestly, it's just a mistake. what really takes the punch is not having a stable income or support system in place beforehand. my friend just spent 2 grand on a 'dream' laptop that he can barely use after a month, but at least he had a job that paid on time, unlike most of his other peers.

Totally agree - I made the mistake of not consolidating my credit card debt when I was 24 and it took me till my late 20s to pay it off. basically, i was paying 20% interest on $5k for 3 years, just because i didn't want to deal with the paperwork (lol hindsight)

ugh, this hits hard because I *still* cringe thinking about teh time I bought a $1,200 couch on a credit card at 24. Like, I *knew* better, but I was "investing in my future" (lol) and then got hit with 24% APR for *months* because I didn’t realize minimum payments were basically a trap. Took me until I was 27 to dig out of that hole, and now I flinch at anything over $300 on plastic. What’s your worst "I was young and dumb" money

Compound interest is a brutal teacher.

SA Sade Ogundimu 2 weeks, 4 days ago
so what exactly was this "financial mistake" that had such a lasting impact - was it investing in something that tanked, taking on a bunch of debt, or something else entirely fr

SA Sakura Yamaguchi 2 weeks, 4 days ago
yeah, because nothing says "adulting" like paying off a $5k credit card debt w/ ramen noodles and regret.

What's considered a 'financial mistake' at 24?

JU Juan Cruz 2 weeks, 4 days ago
ok boomer

SA Sade Ogundimu 2 weeks, 4 days ago
Idk how one mistake can supposedly cost years to recover without actually considering the role of privilege and structural barriers that affect people's financial stability in the first place

Yeah i feel you Ahmet i made a huge financial mistake at 25 and spent teh next 7 years paying for it basically took me 32 to feel financially stable again and its crazy how much time we lose dealing with our own messes

AH Ahmet Polat 2 weeks, 4 days ago
yeah but like, my dumbass took out a 30% apr credit card for a "temporary" gaming setup in college and then just kinda… forgot about it? still paying it off now, and the interest is basically a second rent check every month

AH Ahmet Polat 2 weeks, 4 days ago
How's a single mistake at 24 supposed to be unique??
6
JU Juan Cruz 2 weeks, 4 days ago
yeah but like, the real mistake is thinking 24 is some magic age where you’re suddenly supposed to have it all figured out instead of just winging it like the rest of us lol

EM Emeka Kamara 2 weeks, 4 days ago
Just spent 2 years recovering from that 1 time i took out a cash advance on my credit card to pay rent - turns out not being smart with that $500 wound up costing me a new car when I finally managed to stabilize my finances
