Why do liver disease symptoms often go unnoticed?

Why do liver disease symptoms often go unnoticed?

Why do liver disease symptoms often go unnoticed?
There's this weird gap in health conversations where liver disease suddenly gets serious and people freak out, but nobody talks about the early signs that might have been there months or years before. I know this from experiencing it firsthand - I've been dealing with liver issues for a while now, and looking back, I should've caught the warning signs.

Liver disease progression can be super slow, so by the time you get a diagnosis, your liver can be pretty far gone. It's wild how people can feel completely fine one day and then suddenly realize their body has been silently fighting for years. My friends have noticed weird changes in my behavior - like me eating less or losing weight - way before any tests could detect liver damage.

What do you think the earliest signs of liver disease are, and why don't more people talk about them? Has anyone else experienced something similar, and if so, how did it change your perspective on life?

I've seen some pretty scary stuff in medicine as a patient advocate, but nothing beats my friend's case - her husband had cirrhosis for years and literally just passed off those recurring yellow eyes and dark urine as 'just a weird flu'. Only when his hands started turning into liver spots did anyone even suggest a liver test. And by then it was too late, its still hard to believe it took that long for some basic testing to catch something so obvious, but that's the scary part - liver disease symptoms are often too subtle to notice, or just shrugged off as 'normal' or 'just fatigue'

I get what you're saying, but I think you're glossing over the main reason symptoms go unnoticed - lack of AWARENESS among non-medical people and the fact that early liver disease often has non-specific symptoms that can be confused with other conditions. We need to get the word out there.

I'm gonna interrupt HERE, sorry, but you can't just say Funmi's aunt was dead before she admitted it without acknowledging that liver disease can be asymptomatic for years, sometimes decades, before things get really bad.

i agree with the sentiment that liver disease symptoms can be easy to overlook, but what about patients with underlying conditions that are already causing fatigue or weight loss? Like someone with chronic kidney disease, for instance - they might attribute their symptoms to CKD rather than suspecting liver issues entirely

samir u were saying ppl r usually asymptomatic til symptoms appear, but what do u think happens in those cases where they finally notice something's off? 💯

first time posting but i'm a nurse and i think part of the issue is people don't realize there are actually many different types of liver disease, and each has its own unique symptom profile. its not just liver failure you see on a TV show

The reason liver disease symptoms often go unnoticed is because they're often nonspecific, such as fatigue, weight loss, and mild abdominal pain, which can easily be misdiagnosed or mistaken for other conditions. Also, many people with early-stage liver disease don't experience noticeable symptoms at all until their liver is severely damaged.

First time posting but i'm curious to know why you said 'often no' at the end, were you starting to say 'non-specific' again or was that just a pause lowkey

First time posting but i think we're glossing over what antoine actually said - it seemed like "no" was missing at the end, implying he didn't even notice the symptoms in his case.

I've been dealing with this exact thing for like 6 months now, and it wasn't until I had a bad case of jaundice that my liver issues actually got some attention. People just assumed I was hungover or tired because that's what they see on TV - no one suspects the real stuff going on behind the scenes. My friends even asked me if I was just "not eating right" or needed to "get more rest", oblivious to the fact that I was actually experiencing liver failure

You'd think that if you're feeling cruddy all the time, it's pretty hard to just ignore. I've seen it in my friends, in my family - ppl just shrug it off, thinking it's just part of getting older, but honestly, it's a cry for help.

I remember when my ex's dad was diagnosed with liver disease, and for months he was just complaining about fatigue and a general feeling of being unwell. He brushed it off as just getting older, just like I would've done if I hadn't seen it up close, and now he's gone th..

Like what's the deal with liver disease being asymptomatic till like super late into the game? 😭

FR Francesca Morin 1 month ago
Oh, I *totally* get this—liver disease is like that quiet roommate who never complains until the fridge is already overflowing and the mold’s creeping up the walls. (I had a friend whose only "symptom" was this weird, persistent itch that no cream could touch—turns out his bile ducts were half-blocked.) The liver’s so good at compensating that by the time things feel *off*, it’s already playing defense, and who even notices when fatigue just becomes "how life is"?

are you guys serious, people think that's an obvious thing now because it's a topic being discussed here isn't an obvious thing to the people dealing with it in real life. my mom had liver disease symptoms for years, not a thing was done because doctors are humans too and they make mistakes

First time posting but i think this no thoughts detected thing might be what's making it hard for us to notice liver disease symptoms - it's kinda like this numbness that builds up over time and goes undetected until it's pretty severe
