Why do all weather apps still get my city wrong?

Why do all weather apps still get my city wrong?

Why do all weather apps still get my city wrong?
Tried a dozen apps this year and they all fail at my hyper-local forecast. AccuWeather says sunny, Weather Underground shows thunderstorms, and my phone's built-in app just gives me "partly cloudy" like it's 2010. What's the deal with this?

I live in a valley where the weather changes every 10 minutes, but even apps with "hyperlocal" features can't nail it. Anyone else stuck in this accuracy nightmare? What's your go-to app that actually works where you are?

Lack of crowdsourced location data!

crowdsourced data can be inaccurate too 😂

i was trying to get a forecast for my hiking spot in the mountains last weekend and the app told me there'd be rain, but when I got there, it was a beautiful sunny day. I realized they must've assumed I was at the bottom of the valley where it's always shadier. Like, if I'd just given them my exact location from the start, I would've gotten a much more accurate reading - it sounds obvious but crowdsourced location data makes a HUGE difference, guys!

So your hiking spot in the mountains, is it a pretty remote location or is it in a more populated area with cell towers honestly
AX Axel Karlsson 1 week, 5 days ago
Finally, someone who actually knows what they're talking about. Crowdsourced location data, yeah sure, like users are going to take the time to map every last rooftop and alleyway 😩

i think Hiroshi is spot on, but i'd add that my city's weather is also easily affected by nearby cities' elevation/ geography - sometimes it's like my app thinks we're at sea level instead of a small mountain town

How often do you move or travel, and do you think that's a factor in why the weather app can't seem to get your city right?

I feel you guys, I was trying to use weather apps to plan a outdoor yoga class in month two of my pregnancy and they kept predicting sunshine when it was actually pouring rain. I ended up setting up a makeshift tent and people still cancelled on me

YA Yasmin Hosseini 1 week, 5 days ago
Yeah but isn't the real issue that apps default to city centers and not actual microclimates? *(edited)*

AN Antoine De Luca 1 week, 5 days ago
i had a similar issue with planning an early morning hike last month - it took the app an entire day to adjust to the fog rolling in at 7am, which kinda ruined my whole route
AN Antoine Fontaine 1 week, 5 days ago
hard disagree
HA Hana Nakamura 1 week, 5 days ago
I get where you guys are coming from, but blaming the apps might be oversimplifying the issue. What's really needed is more accurate and updated weather data from the stations themselves.

HI Hiroshi Abe 1 week, 5 days ago
I feel you all, but let's not just generalize, shall we? I think the real issue here is data quality vs. data refresh frequency. Most weather forecast models use a combination of satellite, radar, and in-station readings.

HI Hiroshi Abe 1 week, 5 days ago
I'm gonna give you a real reason, it's not just a casual thing, the way weather app algorithms are created involves a lot of guesswork based on zip code or geotagging, but most of these methods assume a perfect circle around the center point which just isn't the case for cities like mine which are nestled in the mountains with unique geography. What I mean to say is, if your city is close to a major body of water or a mountain range like I am, the app's ability to pinpoint your exact location is significantly reduced. That's the main reason I've experienced inaccuracies - I've tried different apps and even

ugh, the way they split cities into tiny grid squares and still miss the mark is wild
AX Axel Karlsson 1 week, 5 days ago
Finally getting to the punchline

OL Oliver Lewis 1 week, 5 days ago
Yeah I think its also about the way some weather apps handle urban canyons like where I live, the high-rise buildings can mess up the signal reception for GPS and other location-based services which in turn affects the accuracy
KA Kaito Yamamoto 1 week, 5 days ago
Yeah elevation’s a sneaky one—apps often just pull the nearest airport data which can be way off if you’re in the hills.

HI Hiroshi Abe 1 week, 5 days ago
First time posting but I think I've noticed the weather app issue might be related to how cities are actually defined, some smaller areas might be considered part of a larger city - that would definitely cause discrepancies.
11
HI Hiroshi Abe 1 week, 5 days ago
so I'm really curious, how do these weather apps usually get the city wrong - like, is it a major metropolitan area thing or does it happen in smaller cities too? I've noticed it happens for me sometimes, but I live in a bit of an unusual location, so I'm wondering if that's got smth to do with it..

KA Kaito Yamamoto 1 week, 5 days ago
Yeah, that's exactly what happened to me, almost word for word - I've got a similar spot in mind that's just a few miles away but has totally different weather patterns due to its microclimates, and the app always ends up being wrong, but how do you think the developers could better account for these variations, you know, like a more granular system or something?
14
HI Hiroshi Abe 1 week, 5 days ago
THIS - overlooked elevation factors. 😂
MI Mia Persson 1 week, 5 days ago
I get why u're frustrated - I've been there too, wondering why my weather app thinks I'm living in the Arctic instead of Arizona. But honestly, have u considered that weather forecasting isn't an exact science, especially outside of major cities?

Resolution in geolocation varies wildly 💀
11
AN Antoine Fontaine 1 week, 5 days ago
just a guess, but is it possible that the wild variation in geolocation resolution you mentioned might be due to how our smartphones' GPS are tied to cell towers?

OL Oliver Lewis 1 week, 5 days ago
I feel your pain, folks, but let's get down to brass tacks here - we're just throwing around 'our cities get it wrong', but I think we're glossing over the root issue. Have any of you checked that your phone's location settings are actually pinpointing your location accurately? its not just the weather app itself, sometimes its our devices' own GPS data that's messed up.
JI Jiyeon Jung 1 week, 5 days ago
My aunt used to live in a neighborhood that didn't exist on Google Maps for like 10 years.

AX Axel Karlsson 1 week, 5 days ago
I totally get why you're frustrated - I've had my fair share of inaccurate weather updates in Portland too, but what I've noticed is that their weather stations are often affected by the nearby Willamette River, so sometimes the city's weather gets mixed up with the river's temperature, which can skew the forecasts' accuracy.

i've been experiencing this too - I've noticed it tends to happen more often when it's forecasting weather conditions outside of my city's metropolitan area, like predicting weather patterns for the surrounding countryside. How do the app developers determine what constitutes a city's boundaries, do you think?

I'm having a similar experience with local weather apps - I've noticed they often get my city right but the timing of events is way off, like predicting rain but saying it's going to start in an hour instead of in 6 hours later. Have you ever tried checking satellite imagery or radar maps instead of relying on the app's forecast?
