What nobody talks about when transferring to a new school: making friends as a senior

It's your senior year and everyone says it's supposed to be fun, but what nobody talks about is how hard it is to make friends when you're transferring schools in high school, especially as a senior. I should know, I'm currently in that situation. I moved to a new school in the middle of the year, and let's just say it's been an adjustment. The other seniors already have their cliques and close-knit groups, and it's hard to break in.

People talk about being shy or outgoing, but the fact is, it doesn't matter if you're the class clown or the most awkward kid in the room - there's still a lot of pressure to fit in. And it doesn't get any easier if you're the new kid. But what if I told you it's possible to make friends in a new school as a senior? I've managed to do it, and I'd love to hear from others who have had a similar experience. What do you think it takes to make friends in a new school as a senior, and has anyone else had to navigate this challenge?

making friends as a senior is hard because the people you're supposed to be networking with are already entrenched in their cliques – and they're not the ones you have to impress, anyway. its the underclassmen you have to gain acceptance from, so you might as well be the new kid all over again.

Most people dont care about making friends in 2 months 😅

GI Giorgio De Luca 1 month, 1 week ago
I'm not convinced that making friends as a senior is super different from making friends in any other year - people are people, right? but what about older, established groups - don't they tend to be more exclusionary and harder to break into?

BR Britta Lind 1 month, 1 week ago
My friend transferred to our school as a junior and literally joined like every club and organization going on in the hopes of meeting people, but they ended up quitting most of them after a week or two because they couldn't keep up with all the time commitments

have you guys found it weird that people tend to make friends with the people they sit with or have classes with at the new school? like, that's pretty much the only times you'll really see each other throughout the day?

Yeah but—what if the whole "making friends" thing is just a weirdly performative way to distract from the fact that you're all just pretending not to notice how much this sucks? like, sure, cliques form fast senior year, but that’s not friendship, that’s just survival mode with extra steps—and nobody admits how exhausting it is to keep up the act when you’re already running on fumes from everything else

Been there. making friends as a senior can be tough when everyone else seems to have their cliques and social circles already set UP, but my friend found a few people from her sports team and they became her squad

people always talk about how hard it is to adjust to a new school, but what really threw me for a loop was finding people who don't just tolerate you in a clique, you know? my senior year experience was weird in that i already had a super tight knit friend group from earlier years, so we just kinda dominated the social scene. but what i remember was having to navigate how to not be a "sister" figure to underclassmen all the time, just 'cause i was a year older

AN Antoine Greco 1 month, 1 week ago
Most of seperate separate* are forgetting the elephant in the room - your junior year was already kinda ruined by college apps, proms, etc. how do you expect to start over in high school when your own year has already been decided? *(edited)*

joining clubs as a senior is kinda like trying to fit into jeans that are 2 sizes too small - it looks good for a hot second but ultimately feels like a stretch its not about fitting in its about actually having people who care about getting to know you

DI Divya Trivedi 1 month, 1 week ago
been lurking and reading all these posts, but i'll jump in since nobody has said this i think one thing nobody mentions is how hard it is to make deep friends at a new school as a senior. i've moved around a lot growing up and i've noticed it's almost impossible to find common interests with people who aren't in the same year. everyone in school seems to be going through major milestones at the same time, but once you're older, it's like you're in this different orbit and everyone's moved on while you're still trying to catch up

transferring as a senior always felt like this weird limbo to me. we moved mid-year so i was already a junior at the new school but the dynamic was still kinda off – kids had already formed groups/cliques in 9th & 10th grade and it was tough to organically fit into that as an outsider. one time i tried to 'join' a study group in my AP econ class, but ended up just sitting alone w/ the textbook because everyone else already knew each other and had inside jokes..

What ABOUT seniors who move schools mid year, is that even more isolating than a traditional transfer?
65
SA Samir Ahmadi 1 month, 1 week ago
Transfering to a new school as a senior is basically a death sentence, unless you're in a huge city where people are just kinda stuck in thier routines. i had a buddy who did this and he literally just attached himself to an existing friend group, didnt even care if they were into the same things. what i dont get is how people handle the feeling of being an outsider, the constant awkwardness that comes with it..

JU Julia Hartmann 1 month, 1 week ago
Yeah i transferred in senior year and the one thing that actually stuck was when thsi one girl in chem lab just slid me a spare pen like it was nothing and then we ended up eating lunch together every day after

I'm curious, how did you guys navigate the whole social hierarchy as seniors and not come across as "the new kid" who only wants to fit in?
8
NA Nana Abe 1 month, 1 week ago
i guess the thing nobody talks about is that even as seniors we're still trying to figure out who we are and what we want do in the next chapter of our lives which makes it hard to put on a confident 'leader' face when trying to make friends at a new school especially if like u said there's that awkward power dynamic with underclassmen
9
SA Samir Ahmadi 1 month, 1 week ago
Transfer students recieve receive* almost always seen as outsiders by their peers, so it's tough to break in that late. My senior year, the student body president happened to be a transfer kid himself and I think he was instrumental in getting the rest of us seniors to accept the new people, he's actually how I made some of my closest friends.

NA Nana Abe 1 month, 1 week ago

Oh yeah it def takes some effort but what nobody talks about is the weird dynamic of trying to fit in with kids who are 2 grades younger than you — you're senior status is respected but also kinda diminished all at once because you're in new classes

transferring as a senior is basically like trying to assemble IKEA furniture while being simultaneously evicted from your studio apartment.

BR Britta Lind 1 month, 1 week ago
So i've spoken to a few seniors who've transferred schools mid-year and they all mentioned joining extracurricular clubs was way harder for them than expected, not 'cause the clubs weren't welcoming but 'cause they felt like they'd already established their identities at their old school

been lurking and yeah transferring as a senior is super weird, but no one mentions how hard it is to be the "new kid" when everyone already has their cliques and senior year teams formed. it's kinda like trying to integrate into a already established family when you're the oldest sibling.

Wondered how you guys did it. you all seem super chill and confident. what kind of social events or situations do you think helped you gel with your senior friends when you first started at your new school?
7
NA Nana Abe 1 month, 1 week ago
it's funny you mention this — i actually transferred to a new school as a senior and what struck me is that everyone assumed i was just "the new kid" and that i'd immediately click with kids my age... but what they didn't account for was that most seniors are already tied up in their own cliques and friend groups, plus they're in a weird in-between spot where they're planning college, extracurriculars, etc and don't have as much time for new friendships
75
DA Daniel Werner 1 month, 1 week ago
Just made the jump to a new school my senior year and i'm still struggling to crack the social code - we're basically at our most cliquish at 17. are there any people who were new to their school last year as seniors and managed to genuinely connect with others despite the whole senior status thing?
