Why isn’t anyone talking about Macy’s turnaround under Tony Spring?

Macy’s Q1 2026 earnings just dropped and nobody’s paying attention—again. Tony Spring’s been quietly closing dead-weight stores and reinvesting in the ones that actually move inventory. Same-store sales up 4%, digital growth ticking up, and they’re finally shedding the bloated real estate that dragged them down for years.

I’ve been watching this for a while and honestly? The market’s acting like it’s still 2019. Meanwhile, Spring’s playing 4D chess—shrinking to grow, focusing on private labels, and even testing smaller-format stores. What’s the play here? Is this just another retail mirage or is Macy’s actually back from the dead? Anyone else see this coming or am I just late to the party?

But what about the revenue side of things? Cost-cutting’s easy when you’re just trimming fat, but Macy’s sales have been flat or down for years—how’s that turning around? I get the inventory moves and store closures, but until we see real top-line growth, isn’t this just rearranging deck chairs?

^ what they said

But what about their debt load? They still owe $5.5 billion, and their free cash flow’s been negative for years.

debt doesn’t tell the whole story!

I get why people are skeptical—turnarounds are messy and Macy’s isn’t out of the woods yet—but Tony Spring’s been quietly fixing the basics: inventory, omnichannel, and private labels. The real question is whether the market will give him the runway to see it through.

ngl the $5.5b debt’s a big deal but their interest payments dropped like 40% since refinancing lol

Why did I have to read this today specifically

But what about the debt load? Macy’s still has billions in obligations hanging over them, and isn’t the "turnaround" just kicking the can down the road? And what about the store closures—sure, some locations are underperforming, but aren’t we just shrinking the business instead of fixing it?

yeah but the debt’s still there and the retail landscape is a dumpster fire, so like… what...

GA Gabriela Torres 3 weeks, 5 days ago
But what about the fact that their stock’s still down 70% from 2015?
14
AN Andi Dela Cruz 3 weeks, 5 days ago
Wait, so you're saying the stock being down 70% from 2015 is just a given? What’s the actual plan to get it back up, or is this just damage control? 😭
4
OL Oliver Thompson 3 weeks, 5 days ago
but what about the actual sales trends? Cost-cutting’s just damage control if the top line’s still shrinking.

But what about the fact that cost-cutting alone can’t fix declining foot traffic if no one’s actually shopping there anymore? *(edited)*

AD Adel Khalil 3 weeks, 5 days ago
But what about the fact that SALES trends are still trash even after the cuts? like, cost-cutting’s just slapping a band-aid on a bullet wound if no one’s actually buying stuff lol 🫠

why is this buried? this is the real answer

i was a MARKETING manager at a small retail store and we tried to replicate a similar transformation under our new CEO, same tactics, similar to what Tony's doing at Macy's, but let's be real, it's a much more complex beast. We made some small strides, but ultimately, the same underlying issues resurfaced, so I'm waiting to see if Macy's actual sales and profit numbers follow the foot traffic lead

Oh come on, Macy’s turnaround under Tony Spring? That’s like noticing the one guy at the gym who actually lifts—where *was* the hype? The man’s been quietly slashing bloated inventory, pushing private labels, and actually making stores feel like places you’d want to browse instead of a museum of clearance racks. But sure, let’s all pretend retail magic is just about TikTok hacks and not the unsexy grind of logistics and margins *(edited)*

right? macy's is lowkey killing it honestly 🤦

I'm not really convinced that Tony Spring's turnaround at Macy's is all sunshine and rainbows. I mean, didn't they still close a bunch of underperforming stores and lay off thousands of employees? 🫠 *(edited)*

EL Elizabeth Young 3 weeks, 5 days ago
ngl, ppl are sleeping on tony spring’s turnaround at macy’s. the guy’s been slashing costs, pushing private labels, and even got that $5.8b buyback approved—lmao, most retailers would kill for that kind of cash

RA Rami Othman 3 weeks, 5 days ago
what numbers are we talking lol

LA Layla Khalil 3 weeks, 5 days ago
Has anyone actually looked into what Tony Spring’s been doing differently at Macy’s? Like, is it just cost-cutting or is there some real strategy shift I’m missing? I feel like retail turnarounds are usually all about the numbers, but this one feels… quieter than I expected.

i was in Macy’s last week buying a belt for a wedding and THE salesperson mentioned how much busier it’s been lately—like, actually had to wait for help, which I don’t remember happening since 2019. But then I saw the clearance section was still a graveyard, so I’m not exactly ready to call it a comeback just yet.
12
LA Layla Khalil 3 weeks, 5 days ago
First time posting here but I've been following Macy's since the Spring transition—same-store sales up 3.5% last quarter, and they're actually closing underperforming stores instead of just throwing money at them

I've been following Macy's struggles for years, but I hadn't heard much about Tony Spring's tenure recently - what specific moves or strategies did you see as contributing to their turnaround? Was it a shift in marketing, operational efficiency, or something else?

AN Andi Dela Cruz 3 weeks, 5 days ago
I’m shocked too—Tony Spring’s quietly turning Macy’s around while everyone’s stuck on the “retail apocalypse” narrative. My AUNT’S been shopping there more lately, and she’s not even a “department store person,” so clearly the magic’s working

Oh, please—Tony Spring’s turnaround at Macy’s is getting *way* more attention than it deserves. The stock’s up a bit, sure, but let’s not pretend this is some retail miracle when the company’s still bleeding cash on private label and struggling to compete with fast fashion. The real story is how much of this "success" is just pent-up post-pandemic demand and cost-cutting, not a sustainable strategy. If anyone’s serious about praising Spring, they should explain why the next earnings miss is already baked in

turnaround? More like turn*around*.

AD Adel Khalil 3 weeks, 5 days ago
came here to say this

LA Layla Khalil 3 weeks, 5 days ago
first time posting but Macy’s turnaround feels like the retail equivalent of watching someone quietly reorganize a cluttered room—suddenly it’s just… tidier, and you’re not sure when it happened.
13
AN Ana Reyes 3 weeks, 5 days ago
What’s really fascinating to me is how Macy’s seems to be flying under the radar with this turnaround—like they’re quietly fixing things while everyone’s distracted by the big, flashy retail stories. Do you think it’s because the changes are happening too slowly for people to notice, or is it just that retail turnarounds aren’t as exciting as, say, a new Amazon warehouse?

BR Britta Gustafsson 3 weeks, 5 days ago
this take is actually embarrassing
1
AN Andi Dela Cruz 3 weeks, 5 days ago
Macy's hasn't actually seen a significant turnaround under Tony Spring, their current CEO. Under his leadership, the company has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and undergone significant store closures, so let's not give him too much credit just yet

OW Owen White 3 weeks, 5 days ago

I was just in a Macy’s last week—shocked at how clean and well-stocked the home goods section was compared to two years ago. Tony Spring’s pivot feels like the kind of quiet overhaul that flies under the radar because retail turnarounds aren’t SEXY like tech or AI. But the fact that they’re actua..
