Use a chair, bench or parallel bars. The counter measures your elbow angle in 3D and registers a rep each time your elbows bend to around 90 degrees and you press back to straight arms.
Shallow dips are not counted and the coach says 'lower until your elbows reach 90 degrees'. Side view shows the bend best, though any angle works.
